The advantages of installing wire fencing without cement

You’re wondering why install wire fencing without cement? Just because your neighbor chose the traditional method (with concrete) doesn’t mean you have to do the same!

Indeed, several good reasons may encourage you to do without cement.

Installing flexible wire fencing without cement has the advantage of requiring much less time, since there is no related drying time. Theoretically, using fence posts can be done in a single day for installing your flexible wire fencing without cement. By comparison, while pouring concrete is quick, the drying stage is much less so! Poured concrete can take up to 5 days to harden completely.

Moreover, the work to be done can be carried out on all types of terrain, and without requiring extensive construction or DIY skills. Good news: that’s your situation!

Another advantage: using cement is quite expensive compared to other anchoring methods. Doing without it therefore allows you to reduce the costs of your layout project.

Finally, opting for installing wire fencing without cement is a good action for your health and the environment. Indeed, anchoring posts with concrete (cement-based) can be harmful. It is a material containing irritating agents. During its preparation, volatile particles can disperse. Moreover, during its production, cement requires a firing stage, which is a source of high CO2 emissions.

So, convinced of the benefit of installing your flexible wire fencing without cement? Let’s discover the different installation steps!

5 key steps to successfully install flexible wire fencing without cement

   1. Gather the products and items needed for your installation without cement

Stakes, tension wires and tension bars, tensioners, bracing struts, in addition to pliers, a shovel, a tape measure, and a line: these are the tools and items you will need to install your flexible wire fencing.

Flexible wire fencing is lightweight, but it cannot remain in place durably without adequate and therefore sufficiently solid support.

Posts remain a wise choice. You will need to choose posts that adapt perfectly to the fencing to be installed.

PVC posts are a modern alternative to traditional wooden posts.

An even more appealing option is using galvanized steel posts. These metal posts guarantee great solidity.

   2. Take measurements

Before diving headfirst into installing your flexible wire fencing without concrete, take the time to measure the area to be enclosed!

Determining the perimeter to be covered allows you to know the length of fencing needed.

   3. Prepare the ground

Now, proceed with preparing the ground to save time on the rest of the layout.

The spacing between posts must be very regular to ensure proper load distribution. One post every two meters is sufficient for constructing a quality fence.

It is recommended to always start with the posts located at corners and ends, in combination with their bracing struts.

For the stakes to hold perfectly in place, make sure to dig sufficiently deep foundations: 40 cm is the minimum required for anchored installation. Plan for greater depth for direct installation in the ground. The hole should be the width of the shovel.

   4. Plant the posts in the ground: the decisive anchoring step for successful wire fencing installation without cement

This step determines the quality of the finished work and its resistance over time, since the posts hold the fencing in place. It’s therefore better to get it right! But don’t worry, it’s simple: just follow our advice!

To install the posts directly in the ground, simply dig a pilot hole, then place the post in it. To limit water stagnation, remember to rest the end of the posts on a bed of gravel.

Anchoring the posts is done with soil. It will be necessary to firmly tamp the soil around the posts using, for example, a tamping beam.

Good to know: if these are wooden posts, take care to protect the buried part with a waterproofing film to prevent capillary rise.

Don’t forget to always check the plumb of the posts as you fill in the soil if you don’t want to spoil the final appearance of your flexible fence!

Did you know? Another method consists of using metal supports. These are anchors made of galvanized or stainless steel sheet. The main advantage of these supports is that they extend the lifespan of wooden posts, since they are separated from the ground.

   5. Install the flexible wire fencing on the posts

We recommend waiting a few days after installing the posts for the anchoring to set properly, before installing the flexible wire fencing on top.

Start by positioning the tension wires, then attach the tensioner, before unrolling the flexible wire fencing and attaching the first tension bar to the beginning of the fencing roll. Secure the fencing firmly. Place the other tension bars approximately every 50 cm from the corner posts. Attach the fencing to the other tension wires and stabilize the installation with tie wires.

Our advice: as you progress, make sure to properly tension the fencing.

You see, installing flexible wire fencing without cement is easy when following the recommendations of an expert in the field. You’ve just finished your installation, well done! Now you can enjoy your enclosed land and relax without being disturbed by the neighbors’ dog…
