Yet, with the right method and quality products, this task is well within your reach. No need to pay an installer if you are reasonably handy. Prepare your project properly before you start
Even before you unpack your gate, careful preparation is the key to success. The first step is to take accurate measurements. Measure the width between your pillars in three different places (bottom, middle and top) and keep the smallest value. Also make sure your pillars, whether concrete or aluminium, are perfectly plumb and strong enough to support the weight of the leaves.
Also check that your threshold is level. A slight slope can be compensated for during adjustments, but a significant difference in level may require masonry work. What tools are essential for installation?
To complete your project successfully, you need to be properly equipped. Having the right tools to hand will save you unnecessary trips back and forth and ensure clean, safe work. Most of the tools are basics that any good DIYer already has. Here is what you will need:
- A tape measure and a pencil for marking
- A spirit level (a large one is ideal)
- A hammer drill with bits suited to your pillars (concrete, breeze block)
- A set of open-ended or socket spanners
- Wooden shims of different thicknesses
- A silicone cartridge for sealing
- A gun for chemical anchoring if your pillars are hollow
The fixing kit (hinges, screws, stop) is generally supplied with your Districlos gate, so you will not need to worry about it.
Key steps for fixing the gate hinges
Fixing the hinges is a decisive moment that determines everything else in the installation. This is where precision matters. Start by positioning a leaf on shims to determine the installation height and the required ground clearance (generally between 2 and 5 cm). Then mark the position of the upper and lower hinges on the pillar using your pencil.
Once the marks are in place, drill the holes, following the diameter and depth recommended in the installation instructions. Thoroughly remove dust from the holes before inserting the fixing plugs or injecting the chemical anchor. Then screw in the hinges without fully tightening them, which will leave you some room for the final adjustments. Repeat the operation on the second pillar, ensuring perfect alignment with the first.
Fitting the leaves: a matter of precision
This is the most rewarding moment: fitting the leaves. This operation is easier with two people, especially for large gates. Lift the first leaf and engage it on its hinges. Use your shims to keep it at the right height and perfectly level. Do the same with the second leaf.
Once both leaves are in place, check the alignment, level and operating clearance between them (around 10 mm in the centre). Now you can adjust the hinge position so everything is perfect. Take your time with this step, because a good initial adjustment ensures effortless opening and closing and protects the mechanism over the long term.
How do you install the lock and accessories?
Your gate is in place; all that is left is to make it functional by installing the final components. Fitting the lock is simple: just insert it into the slot provided on the main leaf upright and screw it in. Then fit the handle and cylinder.
Then fix the central ground stop shoe to the ground. To find its exact position, close both leaves and mark where they meet. The stop must be securely anchored to stop the leaves gently and keep them closed. Also remember the door stops, which keep the gate in the open position and prevent it from slamming in windy conditions.
Final adjustments for perfect operation
Your aluminium gate is now installed! Take a few moments to carry out the final adjustments. Open and close the leaves several times to check that the movement is smooth and free of rubbing. Slightly adjust the hinges if necessary to perfect the alignment. Test the lock. Once everything seems perfect, you can fully tighten all the fixing screws.
