A gate is a key element for the security of your property. To ensure it is durable and functional, it must rely on solid pillars. Their installation precedes that of the gate and takes place in five main steps.
Step 1: Digging the foundations
The pillars will support the weight of the gate and, if applicable, its motorization. Their foundations must therefore be flawless to guarantee the stability of the entire structure. Start by marking out the location of the two pillars and the threshold on the ground. For each pillar, dig a hole 10 cm wider than the finished pillar. Between these two holes, dig a 20 cm wide trench for the threshold, the length of which corresponds to the width of your gate.
Step 2: Setting up the reinforcement
Install a metal frame (a 4-bar square reinforcement) in the threshold trench and at the location of the future pillars. Let the vertical bars protrude by about 60 cm where the pillars will be. If you are planning for motorization or lighting, now is the time to run the electrical conduits. Then, pour the concrete into the foundations and level the surface with a straightedge so that it is perfectly level.
Step 3: Assembling the pillar blocks
Assembly is done block by block. Start by spreading a 2 to 3 cm layer of mortar on the dry foundation to ensure a flat base. Place the first block, then insert a vertical reinforcement inside that is several blocks high. Tie it with wire to the one protruding from the foundations. Lay the following blocks, systematically checking the level (with a spirit level) and the plumb (with a plumb line). Remember to pass the electrical conduits through the center of the blocks as you go. For better durability, you can place an expansion film along the inner walls of the blocks before pouring the concrete.
Step 4: Filling the pillars
Once a few rows of blocks are assembled, fill them with concrete. Tamp the mixture well with a rebar to remove air bubbles and ensure good cohesion. Continue assembling the blocks and filling them until you reach the desired height, which is about 10 cm higher than the height of the gate. Level the concrete of the last block without smoothing it. Once it has set, coat the top of the pillar with mortar and place the cap, pressing firmly to seal it.
Step 5: Sealing the hinges
This final operation consists of fixing the hinges that will hold the gate. Drill the holes for the hinges at the planned locations, then fix them using a chemical anchor. Wait at least one week before installing the gate leaves. These masonry works require precision; to guarantee a durable and secure result, do not hesitate to call in a professional.
