[DIY] Making your own gate: a good idea?

mesh gate

Do it Yourself is appealing to more and more homeowners who are mindful of their budget. Among the most popular projects, the pallet garden lounge set and pallet wooden sheds are common self-build projects.

Some handy people even wonder whether they could take on making a homemade gate. But between the materials required, the specific tools, and the time to invest, is it really worth it? Discover the pros and cons of a DIY gate, along with our advice to avoid rushing headlong into this outdoor improvement project.

Tools and materials needed to build a gate

Building a gate requires a minimum set of equipment: a saw (manual or electric), a drill/driver, a spirit level, a tape measure, stainless-steel screws, and hinges suited to the final weight. For the frame, choose durable materials such as aluminium or Class 4 treated wood.

Supplies account for around 30% of the price of a new gate, but they require specific tools that you may need to buy or rent. A stable workbench and a clear workspace are essential for doing the job properly.

Different types of gates you can make DIY

A wooden gate remains the most accessible option for DIYers: simple assembly, materials that are easy to work with, and plenty of scope for customisation. Metal or aluminium versions require welding skills and specialised tools.

For a first project, keep the design basic: a rectangular frame with vertical or horizontal slats. More complex models with decorative cut-outs or rounded shapes require significant technical expertise.

Steps for making a wooden gate

Start by making a sturdy frame to the opening dimensions, subtracting 2 cm on each side for clearance. Assemble it with reinforced metal corner brackets. Then fix the infill, keeping an even spacing between the slats.

Installing the hinges is the critical step: they must support the weight without binding. Use a level to ensure the gate is perfectly plumb. Finish with the closing system (latch, lock) and a waterproofing treatment.

The true cost of a DIY project

A standard gate costs between €150 and €300. For DIY, allow €50 to €100 for materials, plus any tool purchases. Average working time is 4 to 6 hours for an experienced DIYer, not including finishing.

Cost-effectiveness depends on the equipment you already have and your skills. If you need to buy everything, it is better to choose a ready-to-install gate. DIY becomes worthwhile if you already have the tools and some carpentry experience.

Mistakes to avoid when designing

Do not underestimate the importance of bracing: a gate without a diagonal brace will quickly warp. Fixings must be stainless steel to prevent rust. Allow enough clearance at the bottom (3–4 cm) to compensate for ground movement.

Low-end hardware should be avoided: invest in quality hinges and fittings that will withstand the weather. A gate that is too heavy or poorly balanced will strain its fixings and will eventually pull the hinges out of the post.
