France is a country that experiences different climates at different times. As a result, it is not uncommon to see certain regions affected by snow and the storms that accompany it. To equip your property and manage snowfall, snow fencing is an effective solution for protecting your outdoor space. In this article, our experts explain what this barrier is, how it works, and its benefits for maintaining a safe and accessible environment throughout the winter season.
What Is Snow Fencing?
Snow fencing is used to hold back snow driven by wind and thus keep areas in your garden accessible. Its purpose is to limit the accumulation of snow on a path, driveway, or simply prevent your plantings from being covered by a layer of snow.
It is not a permanent solution; you can choose to install it when weather conditions make its use truly necessary. In addition to being installed and removed easily, it is also, in most cases, a lightweight solution. In terms of materials, you can find snow fencing made of PVC or wood.

Ganivelle: From Sand to Snow
Originally designed for sand and to prevent dune erosion on coastal shorelines, hazel ganivelle can also serve as snow fencing. In addition to enhancing your outdoor spaces, it will protect them from accumulating snow and wind that pushes flakes toward your plantings in an environmentally friendly way.
Ganivelle has many functions:
- Preserve dunes and prevent their erosion.
- Protect your plantings from domestic and wild animals.
- Delineate spaces.
- Prevent snow accumulation in targeted areas.
With wooden stakes of irregular shapes, ganivelle brings natural charm, whether it rains or bright sunshine bathes your garden. In addition to being attractive, hazel is also a rot-resistant wood, meaning it simply cannot decay and has very high resistance to moisture.
Held together by double-twisted wire, ganivelle will be a sturdy ally that will not let you down, regardless of weather conditions.
Building My Own Snow Fence
Whether you are a skilled DIY enthusiast or a beginner seeking know-how, you can build your own snow fence. To make a wooden model:
- Gather wooden stakes or branches of irregular sizes and treat them to protect them from moisture.
- Use galvanized wire of your chosen diameter to attach a stake every 20 to 25 centimeters and secure it with the others.
- Once all your stakes are in place, you can reinforce the entire structure at the top and bottom with your galvanized wire or horizontally placed stakes. Be careful, however, to leave the necessary space for wind to pass through.
If wood is not the solution you prefer, you can always build your snow fence using PVC.
