What is ganivelle?
A traditional fence made from wooden slats or branches tied together, ganivelle is most often made from chestnut wood, pine or other local woods depending on the region and their rot-resistant qualities (i.e., they do not rot). Too light to be used to mark out your property boundary, it is nevertheless very useful for protecting your plants from pets or wild animals.
Ganivelle is eco-friendly because it is untreated, attractive thanks to its warmth and discreet look that allows it to blend into your outdoor décor, and economical because it lets you define and protect areas at low cost.
When should you use ganivelle?
Originally, ganivelle was used on the Atlantic coast to mark access to beaches and prevent the surrounding dunes from collapsing. However, it offers several possibilities for your garden:
- Enhancement: Ganivelle is perfect for giving your vegetable garden, flower beds and flowering hedge arrangements a rustic touch.
- Protection: In addition to enhancing your vegetable garden and flower beds, ganivelle will also protect them from wild and domestic animals that might decide to turn your plants into their playground or pantry.
- Separation: You can also use ganivelle to create plots in your garden and, for example, make a daytime pen for your poultry and separate it from your terrace.
- Concealment: A privacy screen but not fully opaque, ganivelle can be used to hide the less attractive parts of your garden (bin area, garden hose and reel, etc.).
Installing ganivelle
If you are in a windy region, it is recommended to install a stake every 2 metres so gusts can pass between them and not damage the structure. Conversely, install a stake every 1.5 metres and secure the ganivelle with fencing staples, nails or screws.
Once your assembly is complete, it is recommended to bury the stakes at least 40 centimetres and they must be at least the height of the ganivelle. As it is untreated natural wood, you can apply paint or natural varnish to create a new look in your garden. To preserve your ganivelle, we recommend applying a coat of wood stain about every 4 years.
Ganivelle does not require significant maintenance—quite the opposite. Over time, the galvanised wire may develop tannin stains, but the rain will take care of cleaning it.
