Automating your sliding gate will provide you with comfort and convenience for accessing or exiting your property. However, do you wish to install your motorization yourself and not call upon a professional? It is possible. Whether you are experienced or a novice in this area, our experts offer advice for carrying out this installation on your current or future gate.

Advantages of Motorizing Your Sliding Gate

By installing a motorized system on your sliding gate, you will gain increased comfort, especially on days when the weather is inclement. Beyond the benefit on rainy days, it is also a daily convenience that you will appreciate. In terms of safety, a motorized electric gate can help you avoid the unpleasant surprise of the gate closing on your vehicle because you did not reach the safety stop.

Preparing Your Motorization Installation

First, you will need to choose the appropriate motorization kit for your sliding gate (based on the gate’s length, its weight, and the desired opening speed). You will also need to pay attention to the condition of your gate as well as the materials it is made of (wood, PVC, aluminum), as the motorization installations will differ. Once you have checked this, it is important to have the right tools and ensure your gate is well-balanced to avoid surprises.

Motorization implies an electrical network. Therefore, it is significant and highly recommended to check the electrical installation and its compliance with current standards. The electrical line you install will be exclusively reserved for powering the motor.

Motor Installation

Once your preparation is complete, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get down to business!

For the installation, you will need:

  • The motorization kit
  • Electrical cables
  • Conduits
  • Sealing compound

First, dismantle the handle and its strike plate, as they will no longer be useful after the motor is installed. Replace them with the kit’s guiding part. For power connection, you will need to use the cabling provided for this purpose, as well as conduit; these two elements will connect the miniature circuit breaker (previously connected to a residual current device) and the motorization.

If you do not have a pre-arranged location for the motor, you must create a foundation for the cable routing and the motor’s mounting base. Then, drill at the fixing points of the base, clean the dust, and inject sealing compound before placing the threaded rods; you will need to ensure the setting time is respected.

Once set, it’s time to install your motor and its guiding rack on the pinion. Open the protective cover and pass the cables into the housing, fix the motor to the base, and close it. Once the motor is in place, check that it is parallel to your gate. To install the rack, open your gate all the way to the stop and begin installing it with self-drilling screws from the motor’s pinion.

With the rack and motor installed, it’s time to perform manual tests before powering up. Check that from the stop to the closure, the gate is perfectly guided and that the pinion does not jump off the rack.

The installation is complete; you can power up your motor and test it with your remote control.

Maintaining Your Gate

You will need to pay attention to your electrical network, especially with dust and any rodents that might want to build their nest during wintering in your motor. You will need to remove the protective cover from time to time and use a dry air duster or a blower to remove dirt and dust.
