Which fence to choose to never see rust?

Rigid panel

No one wants to see their brand-new fence covered in orange stains after just two or three winters. Rust is not only unsightly: it weakens the wires, makes the fence brittle, and ultimately forces you to replace everything much sooner than expected.

Good news: with current treatments, you can easily achieve 20, 25, or even 30 years without the slightest trace of corrosion, even in humid climates or less than 5 km from the sea!

Why metal rusts (and how to prevent it)

Rust appears when three elements come together: iron (in steel) + oxygen + water.

As soon as there is moisture in the air or regular rain, the reaction starts… unless an effective barrier has been placed between the steel and these two elements.

1. Galvanization: the absolute minimum to require

Every serious fence starts with hot-dip galvanization. The steel wire is immersed in a bath of molten zinc at 450°C, which creates a thick zinc coating (typically 50 to 100 microns depending on quality) that literally bonds to the steel.

Zinc plays a dual role:

  • It forms an impermeable physical barrier.
  • Even if the coating is scratched, the zinc sacrifices itself in place of the steel (cathodic protection): rust appears first on the zinc and takes decades to reach the steel.

A simply galvanized fence (without plastic coating) will already last 10 to 15 years in normal continental climates. This is already better than old “bare” fences, but much better can be achieved.

2. Galvanized + plastic-coated: the winning combination that lasts 25-30 years

This is the standard today for all professional-quality products: a wire that is already hot-dip galvanized is passed through an oven where polyester powder or PVC is sprayed and baked at 200°C. Result: a perfectly adherent plastic coating of 80 to 120 microns.

Practical advantages:

  • The steel is completely isolated from air and water: zero risk of oxidation as long as the plastic holds.
  • The plastic protects the zinc coating from scratches (branches, hedge trimmers, children’s balls…).
  • Wide choice of durable colors (green RAL 6005, anthracite gray 7016, black 9005, white…) that do not fade in the sun thanks to UV-resistant pigments.

All accelerated laboratory tests (1000+ hours salt spray and more) show that this dual treatment withstands the most severe conditions without issue: seaside, polluted industrial areas, very rainy regions.

Good news: Districlos distributes only this type of rigid fence. Our rigid fence panels are therefore perfectly suited for outdoor use, in addition to being at the best price!

3. Rigid panels or flexible roll: which wins against rust?

Both can be excellent, provided you choose the right quality.

Rigid panels (welded mesh)

  • Thicker wires (4 or 5 mm) → more zinc and plastic per linear meter.
  • Welds often protected by extra galvanization.
  • Generally high-end treatment (abundant galvanization + thick plastic coating).
  • This is the most durable solution and the most commonly recommended.

Flexible roll fence

  • Slightly thinner wires (2.4 to 3 mm generally).
  • Same dual treatment possible, but you must verify that the manufacturer has not skimped on zinc/plastic thickness.
  • Professional ranges (“pro” or “reinforced” type) also last 20-25 years without issue.
