What to do in the garden during autumn?

Autumn jobs: preparing your garden for winter

Autumn jobs: preparing your garden for winter

Autumn is not a time of rest for gardeners—quite the opposite. It is the key period to plan ahead for spring and protect your plants from the first frosts. Between clearing out beds, the last mowing, and maintaining structures, here are the essential steps to keep your outdoor space healthy and attractive.

Clean and enrich the soil before the cold sets in

Dead leaves build up quickly and can smother the lawn if you do not collect them. Use them to enrich your compost or spread them as natural mulch around the base of your most fragile shrubs. It is also the ideal time to do one last round of hand weeding and hoe the soil to aerate it before rain compacts it too much.

If your soil seems depleted after summer, add organic fertiliser or well-rotted manure. This nourishment will be absorbed slowly over winter, ensuring vigorous regrowth as soon as the fine weather returns. Soil fed in autumn is the promise of a productive vegetable garden and flower beds the following year.

Plant bulbs and shrubs

As the saying goes, “On Saint Catherine’s Day, all wood takes root”. November is the perfect month to plant fruit trees, roses, and country hedges. The soil is still warm below the surface, and natural moisture encourages rooting before the frost.

Do not forget spring-flowering bulbs. By planting them now, you are setting the scene for next year:

  • Tulips and daffodils for colourful beds.
  • Crocuses and snowdrops for the first touches of colour from February onwards.
  • Alliums to give your borders an elegant structure.

Maintain fences and privacy screening

Before winter storms set in, check that your fence is secure. Wind and damp put materials under severe strain. If you have wooden panels, a protective treatment may be necessary. For mesh fencing and aluminium or steel gates, a simple wash with soapy water is enough to remove built-up pollution residue.

It is also a good time to check the tension of your wires or the condition of your privacy screens. If your fence is ageing or damaged, autumn is the ideal season to replace it with a more robust model. At Districlos, we keep permanent stock so you can secure your property and improve your privacy before vegetation loses its leaves.

Care for the lawn for a dense turf

The lawn needs special attention before it goes dormant. Raise your mower’s cutting height to leave the grass a little longer, which will protect it better from the cold and limit moss growth. A final mow in late October or early November, depending on temperatures, is generally sufficient.

If your lawn is affected by thatch, use a scarifier. This removes plant debris that prevents water and air from reaching the roots. A light topdressing or overseeding on bare patches will help you regain a dense, green lawn in spring.

Winterise equipment and watering systems

Frost is the number one enemy of your watering system. Remember to drain the watering hoses and shut off outdoor water supplies. If you have a pump or an automatic irrigation system, empty the circuits to prevent pipes from splitting due to ice.

Clean your hand tools (secateurs, spades) with alcohol to prevent the spread of disease, then oil the metal parts to prevent rust. Also store your garden furniture and parasols under cover. Well-maintained equipment stored in a dry place lasts longer and makes it much easier to get back to outdoor work when the season starts again.
