One rushed morning, you press the remote control and the gate jams halfway, off its track. Besides being annoying, a derailed gate can strain the motor and create a real security issue for your home. Fortunately, this mechanical problem is common and is often resolved with a few checks and simple adjustments.
Here is how to identify the cause of the blockage and get your gate back in working order.
Common causes of derailing
The most common culprit is often a simple obstacle in the way. A pebble, dead leaves, built-up dirt, or a build-up of ice in the groove of the ground track is enough to make the wheel jump off its axis when opening or closing.
The track itself may also be to blame. If the ground has settled under the concrete threshold, or if a heavy vehicle has driven over the track and crushed it, parallel alignment is no longer ensured, which causes repeated derailments.
Wear on the rollers and the upper guide
If the track is clean and straight, the problem likely comes from wear parts:
- Guide rollers: located under the gate, they support its entire weight. Over time, their ball bearings wear out, seize up, or become deformed. The roller ends up sliding and slipping out of the track instead of rolling.
- The upper guide roller or upper guide bracket: these nylon rollers keep the gate upright. If they are worn, cracked, or loose, the gate sways with the slightest gust of wind and eventually jumps off at the bottom.
Clean and put the gate back on its track
Start by clearing the way. Use a stiff broom, a scraper, or a pressure washer to completely clear out the groove of the ground track.
Once the track is clean, carefully lift the gate (get help, as a leaf can be very heavy) to put the rollers back on the track.
Important: if your gate is motorised, be sure to disengage the motor before handling the structure. This will prevent you from putting strain on the rack or damaging the motorisation during the operation.
Adjust alignment and height
Once the gate is back upright, you need to fine-tune the settings to prevent the problem from happening again:
- Adjust the upper rollers: they must keep the gate perfectly vertical without clamping the post. Leave a clearance of one or two millimetres on each side so the gate slides without resistance.
- Adjust the roller height: most gate rollers include an adjustment screw accessible from the sides. It compensates for a slight uneven threshold by raising or lowering one side of the leaf.
When should parts be replaced?
If the gate continues to derail despite cleaning and adjustments, some parts have probably reached the end of their service life. There is no need to replace the entire gate. Replacing worn rollers, a cracked roller, or a damaged section of track is fairly easy.
