Installing a Sliding Gate: Remember to Level the Surface!

sliding gate leveling

You have found the sliding gate of your dreams, and you can already imagine the convenience of motorized opening… No more going out in the rain or cold!

But have you checked the flatness of your ground?

For your gate to slide smoothly and for its motor to last over time, the surface that receives the track must be perfect. This is where leveling comes in—a step often overlooked but nonetheless essential.

The Essentials in a Few Points

  • A motorized sliding gate requires perfectly flat ground: any bump or dip will prematurely wear the wheels and motor, and may prevent proper closure.
  • The solution: leveling the threshold/concrete foundation beam with a self-leveling mortar.
  • Simple test: run a 2 m straightedge over it. If the gap is > 3–5 mm: leveling is mandatory.
  • Key steps: clean the concrete, apply bonding primer, pour and smooth the mortar, allow full drying time before installing the track.

Why Is Perfectly Flat Ground Essential?

A sliding gate moves along a track fixed to the ground, guided by rollers or wheels. If this ground has dips, bumps, or even a slight slope, problems will soon arise.

Each imperfection will create a friction point or jolt as the gate passes. These repeated shocks will prematurely wear the wheels and, more seriously, strain the motor with each movement.

A motor under strain is a motor that deteriorates faster, consumes more power, and risks breakdown. Uneven ground can also prevent the gate from locking properly at the end of its travel, which poses a genuine security issue.

In short, neglecting ground flatness means risking the need to replace parts—or even the entire motor—much sooner than expected.

Leveling: The Solution for a Flawless Base

Leveling is a straightforward masonry technique that involves applying a specific mortar, often self-leveling, to correct surface defects and make it perfectly flat. For a gate, it is applied to the concrete foundation beam (also called the threshold or footing) on which the track will be installed.

This thin layer of mortar will fill dips and mask bumps to create an ideal running surface. It guarantees smooth, quiet movement with no strain on the mechanism. Consider leveling as the finishing touch to your masonry—the one that ensures the entire system functions properly.

How Do You Know If You Need Leveling?

To check the flatness of your threshold, the method is simple. Take a long mason’s straightedge of at least 2 meters and place it on the concrete beam. Slide it along the entire length where the track will be installed. If you see a gap of more than 3 to 5 mm between the straightedge and the ground, or if the straightedge “rocks” on a bump, then leveling is necessary.

Expert advice: Do not ignore these small defects, as they are the ones that, over time, will cause the most damage!

Key Steps for Successful Leveling

Carrying out leveling is within the reach of any experienced DIY enthusiast. The key is surface preparation. Here are the steps to follow:

  • Clean the surface: The concrete must be clean, dry, and free of crumbling sections. Thorough brushing and dust removal are a minimum. If the threshold is stained or greasy, more intensive cleaning is required.
  • Apply a bonding primer: This liquid undercoat ensures a perfect bond between the old concrete and the new leveling mortar, preventing any risk of detachment.
  • Prepare and pour the mortar: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for mixing carefully. Then pour the product onto the threshold and spread it with a smoothing trowel to help it level.
  • Allow to dry: Drying time is crucial. Do not be too hasty to install your track, and observe the time specified on the packaging before walking on it or drilling.
