Before You Begin: Preparing the Ground and Materials
Before even unpacking your panels, proper preparation is the key to a successful and durable installation. Start by cleaning the surface on which the barrier will be fixed, whether it is a concrete slab, a wooden pool deck, or concrete pads. The area must be clean, level, and stable. Then unpack your pool fence kit and verify that all components are present: posts, mesh panels, mounting plates or sleeves, fasteners, and, of course, the safety gate. Gather the necessary tools: a tape measure, a chalk line, a hammer drill with a bit suitable for your surface, a spirit level, and a mallet.
Marking and Drilling: Precision Steps
The positioning of your barrier is essential. The standard requires a minimum distance of 1 meter between the fence and the water’s edge. This safety distance prevents a child from falling into the water immediately after crossing the barrier and allows easy circulation around the pool. Using your chalk line, mark the exact location of the future fence. Then precisely mark the drilling points for each post, following the distance recommended in the assembly instructions. Drilling must be done carefully, vertically and to the correct depth, to ensure solid post fixation. Once the holes are drilled, clean them thoroughly to remove all dust.
Fixing the Posts, the Framework of Your Safety
The posts form the skeleton of your installation. Their solidity and plumb alignment are therefore non-negotiable. Depending on the barrier model and the nature of your surface, fixation will be done via surface-mounted plates or sleeves set in the holes you have just drilled. For setting, use mortar or chemical anchor for rapid setting and maximum strength. Insert each post into its sleeve or onto its plate and systematically use the spirit level to ensure it is perfectly vertical. Take the time to properly adjust each post before the setting dries completely.
Installing the Panels and Access Gate
Once the posts are firmly fixed and the drying time has been observed, you can proceed with installing the flexible or rigid mesh panels. They are generally fixed by a tensioning or clip system onto the posts. Ensure that each panel is properly tensioned and securely fastened. The most important step is installing the safety gate. To comply with the standard, it must open outward from the pool, not inward. It must also be equipped with an automatic locking system that requires two simultaneous actions to be opened, making it difficult for a young child to operate.
Complying with Standard NF P90-306: Essential Points to Check
