How to Reinforce Your Mesh Fence?

Mesh fencing is a widely used solution for delineating a garden or a plot of land. It is valued for its affordable cost, ease of installation, and low maintenance.

Even if your fence is already installed, it is entirely possible to reinforce it to improve its stability and strength. This operation does not necessarily require professional intervention and can be carried out with a few simple tips.

Reinforcing an Already Installed Fence

A mesh fence, especially if it was not installed according to best practices, can sometimes lack rigidity against the wind. If your fence moves or seems fragile, several solutions exist to remedy this.

The simplest is to add intermediate posts. By reducing the distance between posts, you stiffen the entire structure and increase its ground anchorage. To properly secure these new posts, you can use base plates or drive-in spikes, which provide a stable foundation.

The addition of struts is also very effective. These oblique posts, fixed to the corner and tension-relief posts, brace the structure and prevent it from leaning under the tension of the mesh or the force of the wind.

For a more durable and aesthetic solution, you can build a low wall on which to fix the fence. This offers a solid base and a more finished appearance, while increasing the deterrent effect.

Maintenance for a Durable Fence

For your fence to remain strong over time, regular maintenance is necessary.

Inspect it to detect any rust spots, especially if it is not made of galvanized or plastic-coated steel. Treat them promptly with an anti-rust product and a new coat of paint.

Also check the base of the posts. If they are made of wood, ensure that the moisture treatment is still effective. For metal posts, check that the ground sealing is not cracked.

Flexible or Rigid Mesh: A Question of Strength?

Flexible mesh is not necessarily less resistant than rigid mesh. Its flexibility can even be an asset against the wind, as it offers less grip. Good quality galvanized or plastic-coated flexible mesh will resist corrosion well, even by the sea.

Ultimately, the strength of a fence, whether flexible or rigid, depends primarily on the quality of the materials and installation accessories. Compared to a hedge or a concrete wall, mesh fencing remains an economical and effective solution for securing your property.
