How to Install a Swing Gate with Chemical Anchoring?

asymmetrical gate

If you are installing your aluminum or PVC swing gate yourself, chemical anchoring is an excellent fastening solution. Particularly reliable, this technique replaces traditional plugs to securely anchor the hinges in the posts.

The principle is simple: a two-component resin (resin and hardener) is injected into the drilled hole. As it sets, it forms an ultra-resistant block that bonds the threaded rod of the hinge to the substrate, whether concrete, concrete block, brick, or stone. The resulting fastening is far more durable and robust than most mechanical systems.

When properly applied, chemical anchoring is not only safer but also quick to install. With the right equipment, the operation is within reach of any competent DIYer.

Chemical Anchoring: What Is It?

Chemical anchoring resins come in several types: polyester (the most common), vinylester, or epoxy, offering varying levels of strength. The product is most often supplied in a cartridge, ready to use with a mixing nozzle. Curing is rapid: the anchoring is solid in less than an hour, depending on ambient temperature.

Steps for Anchoring Your Gate Hinges

This method is suitable for all swing gates, whether wood, PVC, aluminum, or steel. Chemical anchoring ensures very strong fastening in most masonry: concrete post, solid or hollow concrete block, brick, or stone.

1. Positioning and Marking

Begin by positioning the gate leaves in their final location. Hold them together with clamps and boards. Use shims to adjust the ground clearance and gap between the leaves. Once the gate is perfectly level and plumb (check with a spirit level), mark precisely with a pencil the location of the holes for the hinges on the posts.

2. Drilling and Resin Injection

Remove the gate, then drill the holes in the posts at the marked locations, following the diameter and depth recommended by the anchoring manufacturer. Cleaning the hole is a critical step: thoroughly remove dust with a blow gun or vacuum to ensure perfect adhesion. In a hollow material (brick, concrete block), insert a screen before injection to prevent the resin from spreading into the void.

Inject the resin starting from the bottom of the hole. Note that working time is short, often less than 5 minutes. Then insert the threaded rod of the hinge, turning it slightly. Remove excess product before it sets.

Allow to cure for the time indicated in the instructions before hanging the leaves and making final adjustments. Chemical anchoring is a reliable and accessible technique that guarantees foolproof fastening for your gate, even for the heaviest models.
