How to heighten a fence with a concrete base?

Is your current fence not high enough, leaving you with a lack of privacy? Whether it is an annoying overlook, a need for increased security, or simply the desire to better define your land, there are many reasons for wanting to gain a few centimeters in height. The good news is that even with a concrete base already in place, heightening your fence is entirely possible. Discover our advice and the most suitable solutions to successfully complete your project.

Why heighten your fence?

Before starting the work, it is worth recalling the advantages of a higher fence. The first benefit is, of course, privacy. Gaining 30, 40, or 50 cm can be enough to completely hide you from the view of neighbors or passers-by. It also provides a gain in security, as a higher fence is more of a deterrent and harder to climb. Finally, it can act as an effective windbreak and improve the overall aesthetics of your garden by creating a more defined cocoon.

Essential checks before starting

Please note that you should not modify the height of a fence without taking a few precautions. The first step is to consult the PLU (Local Urban Plan) of your municipality. This document sets the rules regarding the maximum authorized height for fences. A simple call or a visit to your town hall will save you a lot of trouble.

You should also remember to check the sturdiness of your current installation. Are the posts well-secured? Is the base stable and free of cracks? Adding weight and height will increase wind resistance. It is crucial that the base is sound. If your fence is shared, a discussion with your neighbor is necessary to obtain their agreement.

The most reliable solution: changing the posts

For a clean, durable, and secure result, the best method is to replace the existing posts with longer models. This technique is ideal for rigid mesh panel fencing, as it allows you to maintain a perfectly aligned and robust structure while integrating a taller panel.

This solution involves removing the old posts to replace them, but it guarantees an impeccable finish and foolproof sturdiness. This is the option we recommend for a long-lasting project.

Replacing existing posts with longer ones

The process, although requiring some work, remains accessible. Here are the main steps to achieve it:

  • Detach and remove the rigid mesh panel from the post to be changed.
  • Clear the base of the post and remove it from its concrete block.
  • Position the new, taller post in the existing location.
  • Slide the concrete gravel board into the groove of the post, then install the new, taller fence panel.
  • Check the levels, wedge the assembly, and create a new concrete seal for a permanent fix.

Adding an extension on top

Another option, often perceived as simpler, is to add an extension to the existing fence. There are extension kits or specific profiles that attach to the top of the posts. You can then slide in a half-panel or another type of infill.

However, this solution is often less aesthetic and can compromise the sturdiness of the whole if it is not perfectly executed. It depends heavily on the type of posts you already have and their capacity to securely receive an extension.

What about screening for your heightened fence?

A higher fence means a new surface to screen! This is the perfect opportunity to install a privacy screen or screening slats for total privacy. Once your new rigid panels are installed, you can easily slide in slats made of PVC, composite wood, or natural wood.

At Districlos, we offer a wide range of screening kits compatible with all panel heights. It is the final touch that will transform your fence into a true barrier against prying eyes.
