How to Dress Up an Outdoor Concrete Block Wall?

discreet garden screen

The concrete block wall is a robust and economical solution for delimiting a property, but its raw, greyish appearance is rarely the most attractive feature in a garden. Over time, it can become stained, covered in moss, and give an impression of neglect. Fortunately, major construction work is not necessary to transform it!

Dressing up an outdoor concrete block wall is simpler than it seems. Solutions such as decorative fences or privacy screens can completely transform it, creating a warmer and more polished outdoor space.

Composite Fencing: An Impeccable and Durable Finish

For a modern, low-maintenance makeover, composite wood fencing is a top choice. Made from wood fibres and plastic resins, it replicates the warm appearance of wood without the drawbacks. Composite slats are fixed to posts, which are installed in front of the concrete block wall. The result is a smooth, contemporary, and perfectly opaque surface.

Available in several shades, such as anthracite grey or wood tones, composite fencing is extremely resistant to weather, UV rays, and requires no special treatment. A simple wash with soapy water is enough to restore its lustre.

Rigid Panel with Privacy Slats: The Clever Solution

Another very popular and economical method involves using rigid mesh panels as a support for screening.

This solution is particularly clever, as it is both straightforward to implement and fully customisable. Rigid panels are fixed against the concrete block wall using posts that are either set in concrete or mounted on base plates.

Once the structure is in place, all you need to do is insert privacy slats. These are available in several materials and colours, allowing you to create the style that suits you:

  • PVC slats: economical and available in numerous colours (green, grey, black, wood-effect).
  • Wooden slats: for a more natural and authentic finish, to be treated to ensure longevity.
  • Composite slats: they combine the aesthetics of wood and the durability of PVC, for a premium, maintenance-free result.

How to Install a Fence or Privacy Screen on a Wall?

The method will depend on the height and weight of the chosen solution. For rigid panels or composite fencing, installing posts is essential. You can fix them directly onto the coping (the top) of the wall using suitable base plates, securely anchored with fixings.

If the wall is quite high, it is sometimes preferable to fix the posts against the face of the wall or to set them in concrete footings at the base of the wall for better wind resistance. The use of fixings for hollow materials or chemical anchoring is recommended to ensure a robust fixing in the concrete block.

Living Wall: A Living and Ecological Alternative

What if you let nature reclaim its place in the most beautiful way? Creating a living wall is an excellent way to conceal a concrete block wall. To do this, simply fix a support onto which plants can attach themselves.

A simple flexible mesh or trellis in wood or metal, fixed a few centimetres from the wall to allow air to circulate, will serve as a support for climbing plants. Star jasmine, honeysuckle, Virginia creeper, or climbing rose will transform your wall into a living, fragrant display that evolves with the seasons.
