In summer, the swimming pool becomes the center of attention. It is a place of conviviality and relaxation, but its safety should never be taken lightly, especially when children are present. To prevent accidents, the law mandates the installation of a standardized safety device. Fencing is one of the most common and effective solutions. Here’s what you need to know before choosing yours.
Is a Pool Fence Mandatory?
Yes, the law requires all owners of private in-ground or semi-in-ground pools to install at least one of four standardized safety devices: a protective barrier (fence), an alarm, a safety cover, or a pool enclosure.
Fencing is often preferred because it provides a permanent physical barrier. To be compliant, it must meet the NF P 90-306 standard. This standard ensures that the barrier effectively prevents a young child from accessing the pool unsupervised.
Here are the main requirements of the standard:
- Minimum height of 1.10 m between two support points.
- Resistance to a 50 kg impact.
- Secure gate that opens outwards and locks automatically. It must require two simultaneous actions to open, which a young child cannot perform.
- No footholds for climbing. The spacing between bars (10 cm maximum) must not allow a child to squeeze through.
- Installation distance between 1 m and 3 m from the pool edge to allow circulation around it without being too far to intervene quickly.
What Type of Pool Fence Should You Choose?
Beyond compliance with the standard, your choice of fence will depend on your needs, budget, and desired aesthetic.
The material is the primary criterion. You will find fences made of:
- Glass: modern and elegant, it preserves the view of the pool.
- Aluminum: lightweight, durable, and maintenance-free, available in many colors.
- PVC: the most economical option, but less durable and aesthetic.
- Wrought iron: offers a classic and robust style, but requires anti-rust treatment.
- Wood: warm and natural, it requires regular maintenance (stain, autoclave treatment).
The type of fastening is also important. There are three main models:
Fixed Barriers
Permanently sealed or screwed to the ground, they offer the highest level of security and durability. The rigid panel fence is a solid and popular option, adapting to most environments. Its vertical wires and tight mesh make it difficult to climb.
Removable Barriers
Mounted on posts that fit into sleeves in the ground, they can be removed when constant supervision is provided (for example, during an adult gathering). This is a flexible solution, ideal if children only occasionally visit the pool. They remain safe provided they are systematically put back in place.
Retractable Barriers
This system combines the advantages of the previous two. The barrier can be laid flat on the ground or rolled up without being fully dismantled. It is the most practical and discreet solution, but also the most expensive.
Do Not Neglect the Gate
The gate is a central element of safety. It must comply with the NF P 90-306 standard, which implies an automatic closing and locking system. Ensure that its opening mechanism cannot be operated by a young child. It must allow adults to enter and exit easily while forming an impassable barrier for the little ones!
