How to Adjust a Gate’s Height?

adjust gate height

A gate that scrapes the ground, closes poorly, or is no longer plumb? This is a common problem which, besides being a daily nuisance, can damage your installation and its automation system!

Fortunately, in most cases, a simple height adjustment is enough to correct the issue. You don’t need to be a DIY expert; you just need to understand the mechanism of your hinges and proceed with the correct method.

Key Points

  • Gate scraping or no longer closing: often due to slight subsidence (frost/rain) or hinge wear
  • Two possible scenarios:
    • Adjustable hinges (modern) → loosen the lock nut, adjust the height screw in quarter turns (start from the top), then re-lock.
    • Traditional hinges (non-adjustable) → unhinge the leaf with two people, add stainless steel/brass washers to the lower hinge pin to raise it.
  • Always work with two people, prop the leaf with a wooden wedge to relieve pressure on the hinges.
  • Precise adjustment = no more scraping and preserved longevity for the gate and its automation!

Identify Your Gate’s Hinge Type

Height adjustment depends entirely on your gate’s mounting type. Take a moment to observe the hinges (or pivots) on which your leaves swing. There are primarily two types:

  • Traditional embedded or screw-on hinges: These are often older and do not have any visible screw or nut system for adjustment. Adjustment is therefore more limited.
  • Adjustable hinges: These are the most common on modern gates, whether made of aluminum, PVC, or steel. They are equipped with a screw and lock-nut system that allows precise adjustment of the gate leaf position in height, width, and depth.

The method to follow will be radically different depending on whether you are in the first or second case.

Method for a Gate with Adjustable Hinges

This is the simplest scenario. To adjust your gate’s height, equip yourself with open-end wrenches or a box-end wrench of the correct size. Always start with the top hinge, as it bears the main weight of the leaf. Slightly loosen the lock nut that secures the adjustment mechanism. Then, screw or unscrew the main nut to raise or lower the leaf.

Proceed in small quarter turns and check the result after each manipulation by opening and closing the gate. Once the ideal height is found, which leaves sufficient clearance with the ground without being too high, all that remains is to firmly tighten the lock nut to secure the adjustment. Repeat the operation on the bottom hinge if further adjustment is necessary for plumb.

What to Do If Your Hinges Are Not Adjustable?

If your gate is equipped with traditional hinges, the task is a little more delicate but not impossible. The simplest solution is to add washers to the lower hinge pin. To do this, you will need to lift the leaf to remove it from its hinge. Be careful, this operation is heavy, and it is essential to have two people. Once the leaf is unhinged, place one or more brass or stainless steel friction washers on the male hinge pin before putting the leaf back in place. This will raise it.

Understand Why Your Gate Has Sagged

Before getting out the toolbox, it’s useful to know why your gate is no longer at the correct height. Most often, the culprit is a slight ground movement, especially after periods of frost or heavy rain. The pillars supporting the gate can move a few millimeters, which is enough to create friction. Natural wear of the hinges or an initial installation defect can also be the cause. Identifying the source of the problem will help you achieve a more lasting adjustment.

A Few Precautions Before Starting the Adjustment

To ensure the operation goes smoothly, remember to prepare your intervention carefully. It is strongly recommended to work with two people, especially if a leaf needs to be lifted. One person handles the adjustment while the other holds and secures the gate.

Also, remember to place a wooden wedge under the gate, on the lock side. This will relieve the weight on the hinges while you perform the manipulations and greatly facilitate adjustment. Precise adjustment is key to ensuring the longevity of your gate and its automation.
