Fence Post: How to Find the Right Model?

Choosing the right posts is just as important as selecting the fence itself. They ensure its stability, longevity, and appearance. To make the right choice, two main criteria must be examined: the type of fence to be installed and the nature of your ground.

Main Selection Criteria

Type of fence: Each type of fence (flexible mesh, rigid panels, wood, composite, PVC, concrete) has specific requirements. A post for flexible mesh will not be suitable for concrete panels. Weight and fixing system are determining factors.

Nature of the ground: On flat, stable ground, installation is straightforward. In contrast, sloping, loose, or uneven terrain will require more robust posts, an adapted installation technique (for example, ratchet posts to adjust levels), and stronger foundations.

Which Material for Your Posts?

Wood: Attractive and natural, it is easy to drill. It must be pressure-treated (class 4) to resist moisture and insects.

Galvanized or plastic-coated steel: Highly resistant and durable, it is often pre-drilled or designed with integrated fixing systems. This is the most common choice for mesh fencing.

Concrete: Robust and maintenance-free, it is suitable for many types of heavy fencing. Its openings allow tension wires or rails to be inserted.

PVC or aluminum: Lightweight and easy to install, they are generally reserved for fencing of the same material (screens, palisades).

Installation Systems for Rigid Mesh

If you are installing rigid mesh panels, you will have a choice between several types of posts:

  • Slotted posts: H-shaped, they have notches into which the panel is simply hooked. This is a quick system requiring no accessories.
  • Clip-on posts: Fixing is done using clips (often stainless steel) that pinch the panel wire against the post.
  • Collar posts: The panel is fixed to the round or square post using PVC or steel collars that are screwed on. This system is versatile and ideal for corners.

Which Height and Section to Choose?

The rule is simple: the post height must match the fence height, to which approximately 50 cm is added. This additional portion will be set or driven into the ground to ensure anchoring.

The section (diameter or side of the square) will depend on the height and weight of the fence. The taller and heavier it is, the larger the post section must be.

Ground Fixing Methods

Setting installation: This is the most robust method. Holes (foundations) of approximately 30×30 cm and 50 cm deep must be dug. The post is placed in them, leveled with stones, then concrete is poured around it.

Base plate installation: If you are installing the fence on an existing low wall or concrete slab, use posts with base plates. These are simply screwed into the hard surface using suitable anchors.
