Everything You Need to Know About Powder Coating for Fence Panels

You may have noticed how some steel fences maintain their new appearance for years, while others rust after the first winter. The difference often comes down to one word: powder coating. This industrial finishing process has become the standard for protecting and enhancing rigid fence panels. But what exactly is it? How does it work, what concrete benefits does it provide, and is it worth the investment?

What exactly is powder coating?

Powder coating (or powder lacquering) is an industrial painting process. The principle: a resin powder is applied to a metal surface, then baked in an oven at between 160°C and 220°C. Under the effect of heat, the powder melts, polymerizes, and forms a smooth, uniform, and highly resistant protective film. Unlike conventional liquid paint, there is no solvent—the powder adheres through electrostatic attraction before curing.

For a steel fence panel, powder coating complements hot-dip galvanization (zinc anti-corrosion treatment). This provides dual protection: zinc against rust, lacquer against UV rays, impacts, and weather.

How does the process work?

Powder coating a fence panel follows several steps, all necessary for a durable result:

  • Surface preparation: degreasing, stripping, and chemical treatment (phosphating or chromating) to ensure the powder adheres properly to the metal.
  • Powder application: electrostatic spray gun projection. The powder, electrically charged, adheres uniformly to the grounded panel.
  • Oven curing: the panel passes through a polymerization oven. The powder melts and transforms into a hard, homogeneous coating within several dozen minutes.
  • Cooling and quality control: verification of film thickness (typically between 60 and 120 microns), adhesion, and final appearance.

All of this is done in the factory under controlled conditions. This is what makes the difference compared to spray paint or brush application on site.

Why it is the reference standard for fences

A fence panel lives outdoors 365 days a year. Rain, frost, UV rays, hail, sea salt in coastal areas—the assaults are constant. Powder coating offers mechanical and chemical resistance far superior to conventional paint. The coating does not flake, blister, or fade except very slowly.

The other advantage, often underestimated: consistency of finish. A powder-coated panel has a smooth, uniform finish over its entire surface, including in the recesses of welded mesh. No runs, no missed areas. And since the process uses no solvents, it is also a less polluting option than traditional paints.

Available colors

Powder coating is not limited to the classic moss green RAL 6005. Manufacturers now offer an extensive palette: anthracite gray (RAL 7016), black, white, beige, brown. Anthracite gray has become the most common choice for contemporary projects—it pairs with most facades without drawing attention.

Finishes also vary: matte, satin, textured, or gloss depending on the range. At Districlos, rigid fence panels are available in the most requested colors, in stock and ready for delivery or in-store pickup.

Powder coating vs. galvanization: what is the difference?

The two are often confused, but galvanization and powder coating are complementary, not interchangeable. Hot-dip galvanization involves immersing steel in molten zinc to create an anti-corrosion barrier. It is the first line of defense against rust.

Powder coating is applied over this zinc layer. It adds protection against UV rays, scratches, and impacts, while providing color. A panel that is only galvanized retains a raw metallic gray appearance—functional, but not very elegant. A galvanized then powder-coated panel combines durability and refined finish. This combination is found on professional-quality fence panels.

Maintenance and lifespan

A properly powder-coated panel over galvanization easily lasts 15 to 25 years without major intervention. Maintenance? A water wash once or twice a year to remove pollution, moss, or dust. No need to repaint, no anti-corrosion treatment to renew.

In the event of a deep scratch (brush cutter impact, collision with a garden tool), a spot touch-up with suitable paint is sufficient to prevent corrosion from setting in. But this type of situation remains rare: the coating thickness withstands most everyday assaults.

Choosing your powder-coated panels wisely

Powder coating alone does not do everything. For a fence that lasts, you also need to consider wire diameter, weld quality, galvanization thickness, and compliance with standards. Impeccable powder coating on mediocre steel will not hold up.

At Districlos, rigid fence panels are manufactured to professional standards: hot-dip galvanized then powder-coated steel, available in several heights, colors, and rigidity levels.
