Cladding an iron gate with wood

Looking to modernize your home’s exterior? The gate is the first impression you give. If it is made of iron and looks a bit dated, cladding it with wood is an excellent solution to transform it at a lower cost. Here are the steps to follow to successfully complete this project.

Preparation and necessary materials

Before you start, make sure you have everything you need. You will require:

  • Woodworking tools: hammer, plane, handsaw (or circular saw for more precision), wood chisels.
  • Measuring tools: pencil, square, tape measure.
  • Fixing hardware: drill with bits suitable for wood and metal, bolts (preferably stainless steel for outdoor use).
  • Wood: Choose a weather-resistant species such as larch, Douglas fir, chestnut, or exotic woods treated for outdoor use (Class 4).

Taking gate measurements

This step requires precision for an impeccable result. Carefully measure the interior height and width of the metal frame, where the wooden slats will be placed. If your gate has two leaves, measure each one separately, as there may be slight differences.

Cutting the wooden slats

Once your measurements are taken, move on to cutting. All wooden slats must be exactly the same length for a harmonious look. You can choose a vertical or horizontal layout, depending on your preferences and the style you want to give your gate. Use a sharp saw for clean cuts. A quick pass with a plane or sandpaper on the edges can ensure a cleaner finish.

Fixing the slats to the frame

Before drilling and screwing, perform a dry fit: position all your slats in the frame to check alignment and spacing. Use spacers if necessary to maintain a regular gap between each slat. Once satisfied, mark the location of the future drill holes on the slats and the iron frame with a pencil. Then drill through the wood and metal, and fix each slat with bolts. Two bolts per slat (one at the top, one at the bottom) are generally sufficient. For very wide slats, you can add one in the center. Ensure everything is tight and stable.

The finishing stage

To protect the wood from weather and UV rays, it is essential to apply a finishing product. Depending on the desired look, you can opt for:

  • A wood stain: It protects the wood while leaving the grain visible.
  • A saturator: It deeply nourishes the wood and provides a matte, non-film-forming finish that does not flake.
  • A microporous paint: For an opaque color and maximum protection.

Apply the number of coats recommended by the manufacturer, respecting the drying times. Once finished, your gate is transformed! It is a much more personal and economical solution than replacing it entirely.
