Transform Your Garden with Wooden Trellis

Plant lovers and fans of warm, cozy décor, wooden trellis is made for you! Though uncommon, trellising is ideal as a support for climbing plants, to define spaces, and to bring a natural feel to your outdoor area. Like privacy screens, trellis panels maintain transparency while visually separating the space. But how do you choose the right one? We break it down for you.

What is a trellis?

A trellis is a panel made up of square or diamond-shaped mesh, used to define a space or as a support for plants. There are also expandable trellis panels that can be adjusted in height and width to suit your needs. Wooden trellis is the most common because it adapts to any type of environment and all plant varieties. Timeless, trellis offers the opportunity to add greenery to your outdoor space and create depth. Affordable, you will find a wide choice of materials, thicknesses, and designs to transform your patio!

Different trellis materials:

  • Wood: pine, acacia, oak… trellis must be resistant to moisture. The wood chosen must be class 4 and pressure-treated to become rot-proof. We recommend our maintenance tips at the end of the article.
  • Aluminum: the primary advantage of aluminum is its durability over time and the minimal maintenance required. It comes in several shapes and colors to suit your preferences! You can also pair it with an aluminum gate, pedestrian gate, or aluminum fence.
  • Artificial foliage: expandable trellis with artificial foliage adds a touch of nature to your outdoor space. Maintenance-free and UV-treated, they perfectly mimic the desired foliage.
  • PVC: a robust material treated against UV rays, PVC trellis is available in several colors (white, green, brown, or black…). Perfect for brightening up a dull wall!
  • Different infill patterns

For all trellis materials, there are different openwork patterns. For wood, you will find several different infills: square mesh, diamond mesh, or even trellis panels with rectangular patterns. The mesh can be more or less wide, depending on the intended use. We recommend wide mesh if you want a support for climbing plants. For a decorative effect, small mesh is perfect! Additionally, it allows light to filter through and gives you a very trendy modern natural effect.

    The advantages of garden trellis

    • Support for climbing plants: this is the most common use. Trellis serves as a stake for your plants, dressing up your façades with beautiful climbing roses. There are also trellis panels connected to planter boxes to grow your plants in soil while training others to climb!

Tip: We have selected a few plants perfectly suited to this use: Virginia creeper, golden hops, ivy. Your choice!

    • Partitions spaces while allowing light through: wooden trellis panels function like a standard fence panel. They can define the boundaries of your garden or patio while maintaining rustic charm and allowing more or less light to pass through. Choose wooden trellis with feet if you want to create small spaces to arrange as you wish.
    • Screens from overlooking and sun: like a privacy screen, trellis can protect you from prying eyes if the mesh is fine. Add leafy climbing plants such as Solanum or Akebia. Some trellis panels have openwork so fine that the mesh only allows small rays of sunlight through. It is the best compromise between shade and light!
    • Decorates naturally: there are superb openwork trellis panels that create plays of light with the sun. Placed in front of a conservatory, positioned facing the sun, trellis can become a central decorative element inside the home.
    • Conceals unsightly objects in your garden: it is not always obvious, but trellis can also be used to hide unsightly objects in your garden such as bins, pipes… Some being expandable, you can adjust them in width and height!

How to maintain your wooden trellis?

Over time, your wooden trellis takes on a grayed wood color due to weather and the passage of time. To slow this process, we have found a few tips for you!

Brush the wood then apply a treatment product resistant to weather. Additionally, give your trellis panels a thorough cleaning every year and apply a suitable varnish or stain. More routinely, check that there are no large residues that could become embedded over time. A wipe with a cloth once a month will suffice!

    Alternatives and similar products

In the same spirit as wooden trellis, wooden screening slats do the job very well! More opaque than trellis, wooden slats slip between the mesh of your wire fence and protect you from overlooking 100%. Finally, you will find complete kits to install your wooden fence easily.

To maintain a natural and warm atmosphere in your outdoor space, opt for split reed screens that attach easily to a balcony railing or wire fence. You can even place a wooden trellis panel on a wall of your balcony and then add the screens to the railing.

    Installing your wooden trellis

    • If your trellis is used to support plants: Leave a 5 cm gap between the trellis and the wall to allow air to circulate using wooden cleats or PVC tubes. Place your trellis against the wall and check that it is level using a spirit level. Mark the location of the fixings on the wall, then drill the wall and insert wall plugs. Then secure the trellis using screws into the plugs. Some trellis panels are sold with the necessary fixings such as mounting brackets.

Note: if you are renting, do not hesitate to use extremely strong adhesive or water-resistant double-sided tape. Do not choose trellis that is too heavy and do not place large planters on it.

    • If you do not wish to attach your trellis to a wall: it is possible to set it in the ground if the feet are long enough. For a patio, the ideal is to choose trellis-effect panels fixed to the ground with metal post supports and held together with stainless steel brackets.

Rules to follow when installing wooden trellis at your property

Sometimes certain materials and heights are required in your municipality. If you choose wooden trellis panels to fence your garden, check with the town hall (planning department) or the Departmental Directorate of Equipment (DDE), advisory architects of the DDE, or the Architecture, Planning and Environment Advisory Councils (CAUE). If your fence is shared, you are required to obtain your neighbors’ consent and therefore share maintenance and modification costs. For information, your fence must not exceed 2.60 m in height for a house located in a town of fewer than 50,000 inhabitants and 3.20 m for more than 50,000 inhabitants.

In summary, wooden trellis is suitable for both large spaces and more confined ones. Interesting for its different infills and uses, these panels allow you to create a true outdoor cozy retreat! All that remains is to work on your gardening skills to adorn it with beautiful climbing plants…
