Key steps for installing an electrified mesh fence

Installing an electrified mesh fence—or having one installed—is an important step towards property security, protecting your animals, crops, or simply your land. Whether you are a homeowner looking to secure your property as much as possible or a breeder who wants to keep livestock safe, this article is for you. From project planning through to powering the fence, our experts explain every step to follow for a successful installation.

Choosing the right location for your electrified mesh fence

The aim is not to turn your home or your farm into an impregnable fortress, so you may only need a single electrified mesh fence. First, identify the areas you want to protect (garage, back of the garden, front façade, etc.), measure them, and determine where to install the power supply.

Regulations for my installation

Next, it is essential to check the regulations. To warn others, once your fence is installed and powered, you must put up warning signs indicating that the installation is live.

Before construction, you must file a prior declaration with your local town hall, along with a certificate approving the power supply solution you are going to install. If your electrified mesh fence is used to keep animals within an area, you will need to contact the town hall to establish the regulations related to the voltage of the source and the amperage of the fences. This may vary depending on the animals kept and their number.

Work sequence

Once the location has been chosen, the fencing plan drawn up, and the various regulations completed and checked, it is time for the installation work! Follow the plan and use a string line to mark straight lines on the ground, or follow the installations already in place on the site.

Next, once your visual guide has been set out with the string line, place your corner posts to mark out and start visualising the area at full scale. Once your corner posts are in place, you will need to install the intermediate posts, which will guide your mesh and allow you to fasten it so it can develop its full strength.

Installing the power supply

To keep your fence live, you will need an energiser, which will be the power source and will supply your entire structure once it is in place. If you are in a region with plenty of sunshine, you can opt for a solar solution; if, unfortunately, it is not always reliable, we recommend an mains-powered energiser.

Once you have chosen your energiser, you now need the conductor, i.e. the wire or the tape that will carry the energy throughout the entire installation. Even if you want a discreet solution, it is still recommended to ensure your tape or wire remains visible. If you have not chosen a solar solution, you will need to drive in an earth stake. Once it is driven into the ground at a distance of at least 1.80 metres, you will need to connect it to your energiser.

Installing the electric fence

It is now time to install all your fence posts as well as your conductor wire. To run your conductor wire, start by fitting your insulators to the posts, working from the furthest to the nearest. All conductors must be tensioned as much as possible (within reason). Then install your mesh and carry out your tests using a voltmeter.
