What Size Gate Should You Choose for Your Entrance?

You are about to install a new gate and wondering what dimensions to choose? This is not a decision to take lightly! A gate that is too small or too large can completely disrupt the harmony of your entrance, not to mention the practical problems that incorrect sizing can cause. At Districlos, we help our customers daily in choosing the ideal size for their gate. Discover our expert advice to make the right choice and enhance your property for the long term.

Common Mistakes in Choosing Gate Dimensions

Too often, we find that property owners focus solely on aesthetics without considering the essential functional aspects. A poorly sized gate can quickly become a daily nightmare: difficult maneuvers to get your vehicle in, inability to receive certain bulky deliveries, or visual disharmony with your façade.

Rushing is also a common mistake. Taking the time to measure correctly and analyze your specific needs will save you costly disappointments. Remember that a gate is a long-term investment that influences the accessibility and appearance of your property for many years.

Standard Dimensions for an Entrance Gate

To guide you effectively, here are the standard dimensions we regularly recommend to our customers:

  • Height: generally between 1.20m and 2m (the standard being around 1.50m to 1.80m)
  • Width: between 2.50m and 4m for a double swing gate, 3m to 5m for a sliding gate
  • Pillar spacing: allow 5 to 10 cm more than the gate width

These dimensions provide a good starting point, but they must always be adapted to your specific configuration. A custom-made gate will sometimes be necessary for atypical entrances or particular requirements.

How to Measure the Available Space Correctly

Taking precise measurements is a crucial step that we cannot recommend highly enough. For a swing gate, measure the width between your pillars or the space where they will be installed. Do not forget to account for the space needed for the gate leaves to open (approximately 90° minimum).

For a sliding gate, in addition to the opening width, you must have sufficient lateral space for the gate to retract. This space should generally be equivalent to the opening width plus 10%. The height must be measured from the highest point of the ground, taking into account any slopes.

Adapting the Size to Your Vehicle

Your gate must adapt to your vehicles, not the other way around! For comfortable passage, we recommend a minimum width of 3m for a standard car. If you own an SUV, a motorhome, or regularly receive bulky deliveries, allow at least 3.50m or even 4m.

Height must also be considered, particularly if you have tall vehicles or plan to acquire them. A safety margin of 20 to 30 cm above the tallest vehicle is recommended to avoid any risk of collision.

The Impact of Gate Style on Its Dimensions

The style of your gate directly influences its optimal dimensions. A highly ornate wrought iron gate will have a different visual impact than a solid aluminum gate. Open-work gates can appear visually lighter and often integrate better in restricted spaces.

For an imposing property, a large gate will create a majestic entrance in harmony with the whole. Conversely, a town house will gain charm with a gate of more modest dimensions but perfectly proportioned to the façade.

Planning Regulations and Urban Constraints to Know

Before any installation, check the planning regulations of your municipality. Some PLUs (Local Urban Plans) or subdivision regulations impose specific constraints on maximum height, materials, or even gate style.

In protected areas or heritage zones, restrictions may be even stricter. Our experts will help you find the ideal gate that respects your tastes, your practical needs, and regulatory constraints.
