What are the different types of privacy screening?

Privacy screens are essential elements for preserving the intimacy of your outdoor spaces, whether it is a garden, a balcony, or a terrace. They protect against prying eyes, mitigate the effects of wind and sun, and can even add an aesthetic touch to your landscaping. Available in a variety of materials, styles, and screening levels, they adapt to all needs and budgets. In this article, we will explore the different types of privacy screens, their advantages, disadvantages, and installation tips to help you make the ideal choice.

How to choose your privacy screening?

To preserve the privacy of your garden, balcony, or terrace, a privacy screen is an effective solution. It protects you not only from view but also from wind and sun. Most models are designed to be fixed to an existing support, such as a mesh fence or a balustrade. Indeed, a wire fence is solid but offers no screening, while a privacy screen alone does not protect against intrusions. Combining the two is therefore often ideal. Easy to install and available for all budgets, privacy screens come in many materials and styles.

To choose correctly, consider several criteria: the desired screening level (from 70% to 100%), resistance to weather and wind, aesthetics (natural or modern), ease of maintenance, durability, and budget. Also think about the environment: a privacy screen for a balcony should be light and discreet, while a model for a garden can be more robust. Check compatibility with your existing support and opt for UV-treated products for increased longevity.

Natural privacy screening

For an authentic and warm touch, natural privacy screening is an excellent choice. The main materials are canisses (bamboo, wicker, reed) and heather brande. These solutions integrate perfectly with garden vegetation and bring a certain charm to a terrace or balcony. In addition to their aesthetics, they are generally simple to install. However, their lifespan is more limited than that of synthetic models and they are more sensitive to wind. A solid attachment to robust posts or a wire fence is therefore essential. Their cost can also be higher, particularly for thick heather brande.

Canisse

Canisses are privacy screens composed of woven or assembled natural stems, often made of bamboo, wicker, reed, or wood bark. They offer light to medium screening (approximately 70-90%) and a rustic appearance that harmonizes with green environments. Ideal for balconies or terraces, they are lightweight and easy to roll out for installation – simply attach them with wire or clips to a mesh fence.

Advantages: Ecological, biodegradable, inexpensive (starting from €5/m2), and they allow a little air to pass through to avoid the wind-sail effect.

Disadvantages: Short lifespan (2-5 years), sensitive to humidity and UV rays, requiring regular replacement. For better longevity, choose treated canisses or split bamboo, which is more resistant.

Heather brande

Heather brande is made from dried and compressed heather branches, forming a dense and thick screen. It provides almost total screening (up to 100%) and appreciable thermal and acoustic insulation, perfect for exposed gardens.

Advantages: Natural and wild appearance, excellent durability (5-10 years if well-fixed), wind-resistant thanks to its thickness (from 1 to 5 cm). It is often used in rolls for quick installation on posts or mesh fencing.

Disadvantages: More expensive (€15-30/m2), can attract insects, and requires reinforced fixing to avoid tearing. Opt for premium quality brande for better hold.

Synthetic privacy screening

Synthetic privacy screens, such as polyethylene mesh or PVC slats, are primarily appreciated for their longevity and ease of maintenance. They offer a more modern look and are available in a wide variety of colors and screening levels. They require almost no maintenance. To guarantee their durability, prioritize a quality model that is UV-treated and has a high density (weight per m2). A higher weight ensures better screening and greater wind resistance. As with natural models, a solid attachment to a mesh fence or posts is essential, especially for mesh screens which have a high wind load. Although very effective, their appearance is often judged to be less warm than that of natural materials.

Mesh privacy screening

Mesh privacy screens, generally made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), come in the form of rolls or woven nets. They offer variable screening (70 to 95%) and are available in green, gray, black, or even multicolored to suit your decor.

Advantages: Very resistant to UV, wind, and weather (lifespan 5-10 years), easy to clean with a water jet, and affordable (€5-15/m2). They are ideal for large spaces like gardens or terraces, fixed with eyelets or clips.

Disadvantages: Can tear in case of strong winds if poorly installed, and their plastic appearance can seem artificial. Choose a weight higher than 200 g/m2 for better opacity.

PVC privacy slats

PVC slats or strips are rigid or flexible bands to be inserted into the meshes of a rigid fence. They create total screening (100%) and a uniform wall effect, available in various colors (green, gray, anthracite).

Advantages: Quick installation without special tools, high durability (10-15 years), resistant to impacts and UV, and easy to maintain. Perfect for existing fences, they cost approximately €10-20/m2.

Disadvantages: Less suitable for balconies (more rigid), and can yellow if of poor quality. Prioritize UV-treated slats with a clip system for secure fixing.

Artificial hedge

Artificial hedges mimic the appearance of a natural hedge with plastic or fabric leaves on a mesh support. They offer medium to high screening (80-95%) and a maintenance-free plant look.

Advantages: Natural appearance without watering, weather-resistant (5-8 years), and easy to install in rolls. Ideal for urban balconies or terraces, starting from €15/m2.

Disadvantages: Less ecological, can accumulate dust, and more expensive than basic mesh screens. Clean them regularly to preserve their appearance.

Wooden privacy screening

Wooden privacy screens, such as panels or trellises, bring warm elegance and structural solidity. Made of pine, teak, or composite wood, they come in openwork or solid slats for partial or total screening.

Advantages: Aesthetic and integrable into any garden style, durable (10-20 years with treatment), and good insulators. They can serve as a support for climbing plants. Cost: €20-50/m2.

Disadvantages: Require regular maintenance (staining against humidity), sensitive to insects, and heavier to install (need for posts). Opt for pressure-treated wood for better resistance.

Wooden trellis

Trellises are openwork wooden panels, ideal for light screening (50-70%) while letting light through. Perfect for dividing a space without darkening it.

Aluminum privacy screening

Aluminum privacy screens offer a modern and sleek look. They are made of solid or perforated panels for adjustable screening.

Advantages: Extremely durable and corrosion-resistant, they require very little maintenance. Ideal for windy environments, starting from €30/m2.

Disadvantages: More expensive and less warm for rustic homes.

Other types of privacy screening

For specific needs, other options exist:

  • Camouflage nets: Made of synthetic fabric with natural patterns, for temporary and aesthetic screening (ideal for swimming pools or events, €5-10/m²).
  • Printed or decorative privacy screens: Mesh or panels with patterns (flowers, landscapes) to personalize your space.
  • Green walls: Structures with real climbing plants, for a living and ecological screening, but requiring maintenance.

The choice of a privacy screen therefore depends directly on the space to be screened, and your aesthetic and practical priorities. Do not forget to consult local regulations (local urban plans, co-ownership rules, etc.) before setting your heart on a particular solution!
