Which handle style should you choose for your gate?

The handle is a key component of your gate. From a practical standpoint, it must allow comfortable opening and withstand repeated use and bad weather. Its quality therefore directly affects ease of use and service life.

However, it also has an aesthetic role. As with a front door, the handle should match the style of the gate it is fitted to. The gate, its handle, and the fence should form a visually coherent whole.

Most gates are sold with an integrated handle and lock. If this is not the case, or if you simply want to replace the old one, here are a few tips to guide you.

The different handle types

You will find many handle models in stores.

Lever handles are the most common. A simple downward press is enough to operate the mechanism. They are available in stainless steel, brass, steel, or aluminium, in many styles and colours.

The knob handle is an excellent option for a retro or classic look. Its appearance pairs well with wrought-iron or steel gates, for a traditional finish.

The pull handle, often bar-shaped, is a simple, modern alternative to the lever handle.

The recessed handle is the most discreet solution. As it does not create any protrusion, it is particularly suitable for sliding gates. However, it is less intuitive to grip than other models.

Which handle should you choose depending on the opening type?

For a sliding gate, valued for saving space, a protruding handle should be avoided: it could hit the post when opening. A handle integrated into the gate is the best solution. Recessed models or flat pull handles are therefore ideal.

For a swing gate, almost anything is possible: lever handle, square handle, round knob, etc. The key is to keep the style and colour consistent with the gate.

Choosing materials

The handle material should match that of the gate. A wrought-iron gate will naturally pair with a handle made of the same metal, whereas a PVC or aluminium model would look out of place.

If you are replacing an existing handle, carefully measure the fixing centre distance (the distance between the two fixing points) to choose a compatible model. This is the most important technical criterion.

Installing a handle is the finishing touch for your gate. Consider both aesthetics and everyday use to make a durable, satisfying choice.
