Which gate to install by the sea?

Choosing a gate for a seaside residence requires particular attention. Salt air, humidity, and constant wind are determining factors in the choice of material, shape, and structure.

Fortunately, there are more options than you might think. Here is our advice for finding a gate that is both durable and attractive.

The right material for a seaside gate

The choice of material is decisive in limiting maintenance and avoiding rapid deterioration of your gate. Traditional materials do not all react in the same way to salt, humidity, and UV rays.

Wooden gates

Appreciated for its warm appearance, wood requires regular and rigorous maintenance to preserve its look when exposed to humidity and salt. It will need to be sanded and periodically treated with a stain, varnish, or marine paint, as well as water-repellent products for protection.

Iron or steel gates

Very robust, iron and steel are nevertheless highly susceptible to corrosion. By the sea, they require effective and regular anti-rust treatment (hot-dip galvanizing, powder coating), without which they will oxidize rapidly.

Aluminium or PVC gates

Aluminium and PVC are the most recommended materials for seaside locations.

Aluminium is an excellent choice: it does not rust and withstands the marine climate very well. For colored gates, choose a powder-coated model certified “Qualimarine,” a label that guarantees its performance in a saline environment. Cleaning with soapy water once or twice a year is sufficient to keep it in perfect condition.

PVC is another worthwhile option, often more affordable. Good-quality PVC does not fade in the sun and only requires a simple wash with water and mild detergent to stay clean.

Adapting the gate to wind

Wind is another factor not to be overlooked by the sea. To limit wind resistance, especially in exposed areas, a slatted gate is ideal.

Aluminium models with louvered or spaced slats allow air to pass through while adding a modern touch. They reduce the force exerted on the hinges and motorization.

However, a solid gate may be preferable to preserve your privacy, particularly if your property faces a busy street or a frequented beach. In this case, ensure that its structure and fixings are sufficiently reinforced to withstand gusts.
