When, How, and Why to Grease Gate Hinges

A gate that squeaks with every opening is annoying. But beyond the noise, a poorly maintained hinge can cause premature wear, friction, and even completely block the mechanism. Greasing gate hinges is one of the basic maintenance tasks, yet many property owners forget about it—until the day the gate becomes difficult to operate. Here is when to intervene, which product to use, and how to proceed.

Why Hinges Need to Be Greased

Hinges support the entire weight of the gate and absorb mechanical stress with each opening and closing. Over time, dust, moisture, and temperature variations accumulate on the pivot axes. Metal rubs against metal without protection, causing corrosion and abrasion. The result: squeaking, abnormal play in the pivots, and in the most advanced cases, a gate that sags or no longer closes properly.

Regular greasing reduces this friction, protects against rust, and extends the lifespan of the entire assembly. It is a simple task that prevents far more costly repairs: complete hinge replacement or rework of the mounting pillars.

How Often Should Hinges Be Greased?

There is no absolute rule, but greasing twice a year is a good rhythm for most gates. Ideally: once at the beginning of spring, after the damp winter months, and once in autumn, before the first frosts. A gate by the sea or in a very humid environment will require more frequent maintenance, approximately every three months.

Outside this schedule, certain signs should alert you: unusual squeaking, resistance when opening, or visible rust marks on the pivots. In these cases, do not wait—grease without delay.

Which Lubricant to Choose

Not all lubricants are equal. For outdoor gate hinges, you need a product that resists water and temperature variations.

  • Lithium grease: thick, water-resistant, it adheres well to vertical surfaces and does not drip. This is the most reliable choice for hinges exposed to the elements.
  • Penetrating oil such as WD-40: practical for freeing a seized or rusted hinge, but it evaporates quickly. Use it for emergency repairs, not as a long-term maintenance solution.
  • Silicone grease: a good option if you are looking for a product that does not attract dust, but less effective against corrosion.

Avoid cooking oil or petroleum jelly. These products degrade rapidly outdoors and end up attracting more dirt than they protect against.

How to Grease Hinges, Step by Step

No need to be a handyman. The operation takes about ten minutes. Start by cleaning the hinges with a wire brush or cloth to remove dust, old grease residue, and any rust marks. If the hinge is very dirty, a penetrating spray makes cleaning easier.

Once the surfaces are clean, apply lithium grease directly to the hinge pin, where the parts pivot against each other. Move the gate several times to distribute the lubricant over the entire contact surface. Wipe off the excess with a clean cloth to avoid drips on the pillar or ground. If your gate has ball or roller-bearing hinges, ensure the product penetrates well inside the mechanism.

Heavy or Motorized Gate: A Few Extra Precautions

A wrought iron or steel gate often weighs more than 100 kg. The hinges are then subjected to much greater stress, and a lack of greasing can quickly lead to misalignment of the leaves. At each maintenance session, check that the hinges do not show excessive play or deformation.

For a motorized gate, greasing the hinges remains just as important. A seized hinge forces the motor to strain, which accelerates wear on the automation system and can trigger unwanted safety stops. Consult your motor’s manual: some manufacturers recommend specific lubricants compatible with the system components.

When Should Hinges Be Replaced Rather Than Greased?

Greasing has its limits. If a hinge is deeply corroded by rust, cracked, or if the pin shows significant play despite maintenance, it is time to replace it. A gate that touches the ground or no longer aligns with the lock strike is often a sign that the hinges are at the end of their service life.

Replacement is not trivial, especially if the pivots are sealed into the pillars. It is better to call in a professional or opt for adjustable hinges, which allow you to adjust the gate position without breaking everything.
