Which fence should you choose for a leisure plot?

fencing off a leisure plot

Do you own a leisure plot—a little corner of paradise where you can relax at the weekend, garden, or spend time with your family?

To make the most of it, fencing it off is often an essential step. But which fence should you choose? Our experts help you find the right balance between budget, your needs, and aesthetics.

Marking out and securing: the priorities for your plot

The first function of a fence is to clearly mark out your property. It helps prevent potential neighbour disputes and physically defines your boundaries.

The second is to secure the site. This may involve preventing wild animals from getting in, deterring intruders, or simply ensuring the safety of your children or pets when they are playing on the plot.

Depending on how you use your plot and where it is located (isolated or close to homes), the level of security required will not be the same. This is what will guide your choice towards a more or less robust solution.

Flexible chain-link fencing: a simple, cost-effective solution

For large areas or tighter budgets, flexible chain-link fencing is often the most popular solution.

Its value for money is hard to beat, and its installation, which is relatively straightforward, can be carried out even on sloping or uneven ground. It fulfils its boundary-marking role perfectly and provides an effective first barrier.

There are mainly two types of roll fencing to suit your needs:

  • Single twist chain-link fencing: very flexible, it is perfect for uneven terrain and long distances.
  • Welded mesh fencing: more rigid than single twist, it offers better stability and increased durability over time.

Rigid panel fencing

Made from galvanised steel mesh, it is much more difficult to climb over or cut through than flexible fencing.

Rigid panels offer excellent resistance to wind and bad weather. Available in several heights and colours (generally green, anthracite grey, or white), they blend easily into any environment.

Installation on base plates, with a gravel board, or by setting in concrete guarantees outstanding robustness.

Choosing a garden gate

A fence always means access!

You need to plan a practical, secure entrance to your plot. Most of the time, a simple garden gate is sufficient for a leisure plot. It will give you easy pedestrian access, whether you arrive with your gardening tools or a picnic basket.

Make sure you choose a gate that matches your fence, both in height and colour, for a harmonious finish. Also consider its locking system: a simple key lock is generally sufficient to keep your plot secure when you are not there.

Check local regulations before you start

Before ordering your materials and starting the work, one final step is still necessary: check with your local town hall. The Local Urban Plan (PLU) may impose specific rules regarding the height, colour, or type of materials permitted for fences. A simple prior declaration of works is sometimes required. This precaution will save you a lot of hassle and ensure that your project fully complies with the law.
