How do you install a mailbox on a rigid fence?

Once your rigid fence has been installed, do not forget to put your mailbox back in place so you can receive your mail and small parcels. Our experts explain how to install a mailbox on your rigid mesh panels without damaging them or spoiling the look of your outdoor area!

Mailbox regulations

Yes, there are regulations for installing a mailbox, and few people know it! When installing your mailbox, you cannot do it any way you like:

  • A mailbox must be installed between 0.90 m and 1.50 m high to meet the needs of people with reduced mobility (PRM).
  • The door facing the mail carrier must be easy to access so they can deliver mail and parcels without difficulty.
  • The mailbox lock must be approved by La Poste, so the mail carrier can open your mailbox using their PTT master key.

Once you follow these rules, all that is left is to choose the right solution to install your mailbox on a rigid fence.

The mounting plate

An attractive solution, the mounting plate is a frame designed to recess your mailbox into it. After neatly cutting a square in your rigid mesh using the right tools, you simply need to screw the two frame plates on the inside and outside of your property.

Once the plates are securely fixed to the mesh, all that is left is to fit your mailbox using screws. Available in several colours depending on the supplier, this mounting support looks great and will blend in with your garden and the view from the street.

Fixing bars

You have just installed your beautiful, sturdy rigid fence, but you do not want to cut it? There is a solution!

Metal fixing bars are affordable and quick to install if you want an effective, long-lasting solution. No special tools are needed; you just need a mailbox pre-drilled at the back so you can pass the support rods through it.

Once the rods are secured on the inside using the nuts, you will need to fit the retaining plates and set everything at the correct height on your rigid fence.

Consulting a professional

If you have any doubts about the method to use, or if you are simply afraid of doing it wrong and damaging your fence, do not worry! You can absolutely call in a professional (or the person who installed your fence) to advise you, guide you and, if you wish, install your system for you.

The installer will review your options while understanding your needs (and also your concerns about doing it alone). They will recommend the best installation method to make your mailbox a decorative feature that is integrated into your rigid fence.
