My electric gate won’t open: what should I do?

modern gate

An electric gate that refuses to open is a frustrating situation that blocks your access and compromises the security of your property. Fortunately, before contacting a repair technician, several simple checks can help you identify the source of the problem. A motor failure can stem from many sources, ranging from the simplest to the most technical.

Diagnosing the breakdown: checks you can do yourself

To find the right repair solution, you must first make the correct diagnosis. Follow these steps to understand why your gate automation is malfunctioning.

1. Check the power supply

This is the first thing to do. A simple power outage in your neighborhood or a tripped circuit breaker could be the cause. Check your electrical panel. If everything seems normal, check the fuse dedicated to your gate’s power supply. It is usually located on the motor’s electronic board and may have blown following a power surge.

2. Check the remote control

If the gate does not react at all, the problem may be with your remote control. Try to trigger the opening using another method: a keypad, a wall-mounted push button, or a second remote. If the gate opens, the issue is indeed with your main transmitter. Remember to check the batteries; a weak indicator light is often a good clue.

3. Inspect the photocells

Photocells are safety components that detect obstacles. If they are dirty, misaligned, or if an object (leaf, spider web, etc.) obstructs their infrared beam, they prevent the gate from closing, and sometimes from opening. Clean them with a soft cloth and check that they are properly facing each other. You should hear a small “click” when passing your hand in front of them, confirming they are working correctly.

4. Examine the motor and the gate mechanics

If the motor grumbles but the gate does not move, or if it seems to be straining, the problem is likely mechanical. To check this, turn off the power and perform a manual release of your gate. This procedure, described in your manual, allows you to disconnect the motor from the gate leaves.

Once released, try to open and close the gate by hand.

  • For a swing gate: Check that the articulated arms or cylinders are not bent or blocked. The hinges may also be seized.
  • For a sliding gate: Ensure that no debris (stones, branches) is blocking the rack or the guide rollers. Lubrication of the bearings may be necessary if there is any squeaking or stiff points.

If the gate moves freely by hand, the problem lies within the motorization itself. A faulty starting capacitor is a frequent cause when the motor struggles to start.

5. Is the problem with the electronic board?

The flashing light on your gate is more than just a movement indicator. It also serves as a diagnostic tool. Often, a specific flashing sequence corresponds to a precise error code (photocell fault, motor problem, etc.). Refer to your automation manual to interpret these signals. If the light remains off or behaves abnormally, the electronic board may be damaged, particularly after a storm.

Solutions for repairing your electric gate

Once the cause is identified, several solutions exist. A defective accessory, such as a cell or a capacitor, must be replaced. Ensure you choose spare parts that are perfectly compatible with your motor model.

Sometimes, a simple electrical system reset is enough, especially after a power cut. Turn off the power for one minute, then plug it back in. You may need to run a new learning cycle so the gate can re-memorize its limit switches.

If despite all these checks, your electric gate still won’t open, it is recommended to call a qualified technician. A gate repair professional has the expertise to perform a precise diagnosis and a safe repair, especially in the event of an electronic board failure. They can also provide advice on maintaining your installation to guarantee its longevity.
