The answer depends primarily on the threat you wish to protect against: intrusion attempts, violent impacts, or simply wear over time. Two solutions dominate the market for their level of strength.
Rigid mesh panels: the best strength-to-price ratio
Rigid steel panels (welded wires, typically 4 to 5 mm thick) are the most common reference for both residential and commercial users. Their structure is virtually resistant to deformation, withstands intrusion attempts well, and limits wind load thanks to their open design.
Galvanized then coated, they offer excellent resistance to weather and corrosion, even in saline environments. Quick installation, controlled cost, and virtually no maintenance: this is the solution we recommend in the vast majority of residential and commercial cases.
Concrete fencing: the impenetrable barrier
When the priority is absolute resistance to impacts (vehicle, battering ram, etc.) and total screening, concrete remains unmatched. Solid and monolithic, it fears neither rust, insects, nor extreme weather conditions. Once properly installed, it is designed to last several decades without any maintenance.
This type of fence is particularly suitable for industrial sites, warehouses, or properties requiring maximum security.
Rigid panels or concrete: how to choose?
Here is a simple table to help you decide:
| Criterion | Rigid mesh | Concrete fence |
|---|---|---|
| Standard intrusion resistance | Excellent | Excellent |
| Vehicle impact resistance | Moderate | Very high |
| Screening/visibility | Open with screening options | Total |
| Sound insulation | Low | Very good |
| Wind load | Very low | High (risk in windy areas) |
| Service life | 20-30 years | 50 years and more |
| Total cost (material + installation) | €€ | €€€€ |
| Installation time | 1-2 days for 100 m | 4-7 days for 100 m |
| Appearance | Discreet, modern | Solid, industrial |
The determining factor: installation quality
Even the best rigid panel or heaviest concrete slab will not last long if the foundations are poorly executed. The basic rules:
- Posts set in concrete (minimum depth 40-60 cm depending on height and soil type)
- Use of concrete with a minimum strength of 350 kg/m³
- Panel/post fixings in stainless or galvanized steel with anti-vandalism system (tamper-proof clips or security screws)
- Respect spacing and level to avoid cantilevers
Proper installation transforms your fence into a monolithic structure that will last for decades. Conversely, a “quick” installation on screwed base plates or simply driven posts dooms the installation to movement from the first storms.
Our recommendations
For the vast majority of residential and commercial users, a quality rigid panel fence (4 to 5 mm wires, galvanized + coated) properly installed offers a more than adequate level of strength, excellent service life, and the best quality/price/longevity ratio.
Only very specific cases (high risk of vehicle impact, need for absolute screening and sound insulation, SEVESO-classified site or equivalent) justify moving to concrete.
Always start with professional rigid mesh. If your requirements go beyond that, then (and only then) consider concrete. You will avoid unnecessary expense while benefiting from a genuinely strong and durable fence.
