Aluminum Fence: Solid, Slatted, or Louvered Slats, How to Choose?

Choosing an aluminum fence is not just about its aesthetic appeal. The type of infill (solid, slatted, or louvered slats) determines your level of privacy, the brightness of your garden, and your installation’s wind resistance. At Districlos, we help you find the technical configuration suited to your terrain’s specific conditions.

Solid Slats for Complete Privacy

This is the most requested format. Solid slats completely block the view from the street or neighbors. It is the most reassuring option around a swimming pool or for a very exposed terrace.

Visually, this type of panel creates a massive look that extends the house’s walls. However, be mindful of wind exposure. A solid fence acts like a boat’s sail. If your region is exposed to gusts, you will need to anticipate this with reinforced base plates or deeper foundations for your posts.

Openwork for Air and Light Circulation

If you have a small garden, enclosing it behind solid panels can quickly create a feeling of confinement. Openwork slats allow light to pass through and offer an unobstructed view of the outside.

This is primarily the technical choice to favor in windy regions. Air circulates between the slats instead of pushing against the structure, which significantly reduces the tension exerted on the posts. During assembly, our kits allow you to adjust the spacing by simply changing the size of the spacers.

The Louvered Slat Compromise

The louvered slat offers a happy medium. Its slats are angled: from the front, no one can see into your garden, but air continues to circulate.

This format breaks the ‘wall effect’ of solid slats while protecting your privacy. It is an excellent solution for naturally ventilating a garden that tends to retain heat in the summer, while avoiding wind resistance issues.

The Advantage of Aluminum

Wood requires regular maintenance, and PVC often fades under the sun’s action. Aluminum remains stable. Current powder-coated paints resist corrosion and UV rays with minimal effort: a simple water cleaning from time to time is sufficient.

The rigidity of aluminum also allows for the installation of wider panels without fear of them bending or deforming after a few years. The fence’s alignment remains straight.

The Importance of Exposure

This is the most underestimated criterion when purchasing. Observe carefully how the wind behaves on your property. In a wind corridor or a very open area, avoid solid slats. Opt for openwork or louvered designs to prevent your installation from bending in the first storm.

If your house is in a city or well-protected by other buildings, you can install solid panels. Regardless of the chosen model, the final solidity will depend on the sealing. A quality post that is poorly secured will not hold.

Installation with Districlos

Our fences are sold in kits to facilitate assembly. The posts are grooved, and the slats simply stack inside to the desired height. The most common color remains anthracite gray (RAL 7016), but other shades and finishes (matte or sanded) are available.

If you are unsure about the configuration, our teams can calculate the exact quantities of slats, posts, and accessories with you, based on your low wall’s dimensions. The material is available for delivery to the construction site or for pickup at our depots.
