Standards to Know for Your Pool Barrier

pool barrier

If you own an in-ground or semi-in-ground pool, or if you plan to install one, the law requires you to implement a standardized safety device. This obligation, in force since 2004, aims primarily at the prevention of drowning, particularly among young children. Among the four approved devices (alarm, cover, enclosure, barrier), the protective barrier remains one of the most popular solutions for its reliability.

To be compliant, your installation must adhere to specific regulations. The NF P90-306 pool barrier standard defines all the requirements to be followed.

The NF P90-306 Standard: The Legal Framework for Your Safety

The pool safety law mandates that any outdoor private pool, whether in-ground or semi-in-ground, must be equipped with at least one of the four required safety devices. The protective barrier, governed by the NF P90-306 standard, aims to physically prevent a child under 5 years old from accessing the pool without adult assistance.

The manufacturer or installer must provide you with a certificate of conformity. This document certifies that the product meets all the standard’s requirements. Keep it carefully, as your insurer may request it in the event of an accident.

Technical Criteria for a Compliant Pool Barrier

For a pool fence to be NF P90-306 approved, it must meet strict specifications.

Height and spacing

The height of the barrier, between the highest support point and the top of the fence, must be at least 1.10 meters. This measurement is designed to prevent a young child from climbing over it. The ground clearance, meaning the space under the barrier, must not exceed 25 mm to prevent a child from slipping underneath.

If your pool fence is made of bars, the spacing between them must not exceed 102 mm, whether vertical or horizontal.

The Safety Gate

Access to the pool must be via a safety gate that also meets specific rules. It must open outwards from the pool to prevent a child from pushing it open to enter.

Its locking system must be secure and require two simultaneous or consecutive actions to open. This ensures that a young child cannot operate it alone. An automatic locking mechanism is often integrated so that the gate closes and locks without manual intervention.

Resistance and Installation

The barrier must be able to withstand an impact of 50 kg without breaking or deforming, simulating the weight of a child leaning or falling on it. Its materials must not be sharp: no sharp edges or points that could cause cuts or scratches.

Finally, the pool barrier must be installed at least 1 meter from the edge of the pool. This safety distance provides sufficient circulation space and prevents a child who has managed to get past the barrier from falling directly into the water.

Different Types of Compliant Barriers

Compliance with the pool barrier standard does not mandate a single material. You can find models that suit your taste and budget.

  • Mesh or PVC barrier: This is an economical and easy-to-install solution. Often flexible, it absorbs impacts well.
  • Glass barrier: More aesthetically pleasing, it offers an unobstructed view of the pool while ensuring safety. Its cost is higher.
  • Wrought iron or aluminum barrier: It offers a classic look and great longevity.

Regarding fastening, there are fixed models, sealed to the ground, and removable protective fences. The latter, such as Beethoven brand barriers, can be dismantled when constant supervision is provided. There are also retractable pool fences, which retract into the ground manually or automatically, but their installation is more complex and expensive. Whatever your choice, the essential thing is to verify that the selected model is indeed NF P90-306 certified.
