Is your fabric privacy screen, once perfectly taut and aesthetically pleasing, starting to ripple and sag in the wind? This is a common phenomenon. Over time, exposure to sun, rain, and especially gusts, a privacy fabric can lose its tension. Fortunately, it is not always necessary to replace everything. A few simple steps and the right accessories can give it a second life and once again guarantee your privacy.
Why Does My Fabric Sag?
The main cause is wind exposure. A fabric, even micro-perforated, acts like a sail and exerts constant pressure on its attachment points. Added to this are temperature variations and the effect of UV rays which, in the long term, can slightly alter the elasticity of the fabric and its fasteners.
Initial installation with fasteners that are too far apart or of poor quality is also an aggravating factor that accelerates the sagging process.
The Simple Method: Tighten Existing Fasteners
If your fabric and eyelets are in good condition, a simple re-tightening may suffice. Start from one corner and progress methodically along the entire length, beginning with the upper section.
Detach a few fasteners, pull the fabric firmly to re-tension it, then re-secure it solidly. Repeat the operation on the lower section, ensuring you apply uniform tension to avoid creating new loose areas. Take this opportunity to replace any cable ties (Colson) that appear worn or brittle.
Using Tensioners
For a more effective and, above all, more durable result, the use of elastic tensioners, also known as bungee cords, is the professional solution par excellence. Unlike a rigid fastener, the tensioner maintains constant tension while absorbing shocks caused by strong gusts of wind. This protects the eyelets from tearing and ensures increased longevity for your installation. Simply replace your old ties with these tensioners by passing them through the eyelets and around the support.
- Bungee cords with hooks or balls: Very practical, they allow for quick installation and flexible tension, ideal for rigid panel fences.
- Tension wire with tensioners: This technique, often used for installing wire mesh, can be adapted. A steel wire is stretched at the top and bottom of the fence, to which the fabric is then attached with clips.
What to Do If Eyelets Are Torn Out?
A torn-out eyelet is a major weak point that transfers tension to its neighbors, creating a domino effect. If you notice that several eyelets are damaged, it is possible to repair them.
You can find eyelet installation kits commercially available, which contain a special plier and replacement eyelets. You will simply need to create a new, clean perforation in the fabric, near the old one, and crimp a new eyelet. Your privacy screen will then be ready to be properly re-tensioned.
Expert Advice
To prevent the problem from recurring, the key lies in the quality of the initial installation. A well-installed privacy screen from the start will resist climatic aggressions much better.
Remember to distribute the attachment points evenly to distribute the wind force over the entire surface. An attachment that is too loose or, conversely, excessive tension during initial installation can weaken the fabric and its eyelets. Balance is the key to a lasting installation.
