Do you need to create a new access point to your garden, a passage for your lawnmower, or simply a small gate where there wasn’t one before? Creating an opening in an existing fence is a perfectly achievable task, whether your fence is made of flexible mesh or rigid panels. No need to dismantle everything! With the right tools and a methodical approach, you can make a clean and secure cut. We explain how to proceed step by step.
Equipment Required for Your Project
Before you begin, make sure you have the right equipment at hand. Proper preparation is key to successful and safe work. The choice of cutting tool will depend primarily on the type of fence you have.
Here is what you will need:
- Thick protective gloves to prevent cuts.
- A tape measure and marker to precisely mark out the area to be cut.
- Good-quality wire cutters for flexible mesh fencing.
- Bolt cutters or an angle grinder with a metal cutting disc for rigid panels.
Preparing the Fence Cut Properly
The first step is to define the exact dimensions of your future opening. Measure and mark the location of the cut directly on the fence using your marker. Remember to allow sufficient width for the desired passage, adding a few extra centimeters if you plan to install a gate afterward.
If you are working on flexible mesh held by tension wires, it may be advisable to slightly loosen the relevant wire in the work area. This will make cutting easier and prevent the mesh from deforming suddenly when cut. For a rigid panel, simply check that it is stable between its posts.
Technique for Cutting Flexible Mesh Fencing
For rolled mesh fencing, cutting is fairly straightforward. Once your marks are in place, begin by cutting the vertical wires using your wire cutters, following your line. Work wire by wire, from top to bottom, on one side then the other. Once the sides are cut, cut the horizontal wires at the top and bottom of your opening. Your passage is created!
How to Proceed with a Rigid Panel?
Cutting a rigid mesh panel requires a bit more force. Bolt cutters are effective, but an angle grinder provides a faster and cleaner cut. Always wear safety goggles in addition to your gloves. Follow your marks by cutting the vertical steel wires, then the horizontal wires. Try to cut as close to the welds as possible for a cleaner finish and to minimize protruding wire ends.
Securing the Edges of the Opening
Once the cut is complete, the ends of the cut wires can be sharp and dangerous. This is a step that must not be overlooked. The simplest solution is to carefully fold each wire back on itself using pliers, toward the inside of the mesh.
For a more professional finish and optimal safety, you can also use protective caps or finishing profiles. This will prevent anyone from getting injured and give your opening a cleaner appearance.
What About Installing a Gate?
Now that your opening is complete, why not transform it into a truly functional access point? Installing a gate is the ideal solution to finalize your project. You will simply need to fix two additional posts on each side of the opening to mount the hinges and lock of your new gate. This will provide you with a practical, secure, and attractive passage.
