How to Secure a Gate That Opens in the Wind?

It is a noise nuisance one would gladly avoid, especially at night: the gate slamming violently with every gust! Beyond the noise, a swinging gate that opens on its own poses a real risk to the security of your property and the integrity of your equipment. With repeated exposure to these shocks, the hinges warp, the lock wears out prematurely, and the gate’s structure itself can deform. It is urgent to intervene before the mechanism completely fails!

Check the Strike Plate and Lock Adjustment

Before investing in additional hardware, the first step is to check the existing setup. Often, a gate opens in the wind simply because the lock bolt does not engage deeply enough into the strike plate. Over time and with temperature variations, the play between the leaves can shift, leading to a “loose” closure.

If you notice that the gate moves even when closed, you must adjust the strike plate or regulate the hinges to tighten the leaves. The objective is to eliminate this mechanical play: the less space the gate has to vibrate, the less leverage the wind will have to dislodge the latch.

Install a Gate Stop or Central Buffer

For double-leaf swinging gates, the presence of a gate stop (also called a central buffer) is essential. Firmly fixed to the ground, this accessory, made of cast iron, steel, or polyamide, serves as a physical support point for the leaves in the closed position.

Without this stop, the wind pushes the leaves beyond their normal axis, which strains the hinges and eventually causes the lock to fail. Ensure that your gate stop is in good condition and has a retention system (a rocker) that blocks the bottom of the gate to prevent it from swinging back during a gust.

Opt for a Ground Lock or Bayonet Bolt

This is undoubtedly the most effective and economical mechanical solution for securing a manual gate. The ground lock, often called a bayonet bolt, is a vertical metal rod that is lowered into a housing sealed in concrete.

Once engaged, this device completely secures the gate leaf to the ground. The resistance is maximal: even a storm will not be able to move the leaf. This accessory is highly recommended for installation on each leaf, in addition to the central lock, especially if you live in a windy region.

Motorization for Optimal Locking

If you are tired of manual operations, automation is a radical answer to the problem of wind. Once the arms or actuators are in the closed position, the motor exerts constant pressure that acts as an automatic lock.

Worm gear or ram motors are particularly renowned for their ability to firmly hold the leaves, preventing any unintended opening. However, for very large solid gates, it is sometimes necessary to add an electric ground lock coupled with the motor to relieve mechanical stress in case of strong winds.

Reduce Wind Resistance of Privacy Screens

Sometimes, the problem does not come from the closing system, but from the gate’s surface itself. If you have installed total screening (such as dense fabric or PVC slats) on an openwork gate, you have created a true “sail effect.” The pressure exerted by the wind on the structure then becomes colossal, capable of bending aluminum or tearing off fixings.

To limit this risk without sacrificing your privacy, opt for suitable solutions:

  • Choose perforated privacy screens (nets or micro-perforated fabrics) that allow air to circulate.
  • Leave decompression spaces at the bottom and top of the gate to relieve overpressure.

Choosing the Right Screening According to Exposure

The choice of screening material must be made according to the robustness of your gate and your geographical exposure. A lightweight PVC gate will not withstand the same wind load as a reinforced steel or aluminum model.

At Districlos, we always advise checking the structure’s compatibility before installing rigid screening kits. If your gate is located in a windy corridor, it is better to slightly reduce the opacity to ensure the gate remains closed and intact over time.
