Rigid Fencing: How to Make It Invisible in Under 3 Months

Rigid fencing: how to make it invisible in less than 3 months

You have just installed rigid fencing, and the result is… very much a fence. Visible metal panels, a cold appearance, not exactly what you had in mind for your garden. Good news: there are concrete techniques to green up and camouflage rigid fencing in just a few weeks. Climbing plants, natural screens, hedges – here’s how to transform your fence into a living wall before the end of the season.

Why Rigid Fencing Is Well-Suited for Greening

Rigid panels were not designed for this purpose, yet it is their main aesthetic asset. Their welded mesh structure forms a stable and regular support on which climbing plants can easily attach themselves. Unlike flexible mesh, which sways in the wind and deforms under the weight of vegetation, rigid panels remain firmly in place.

Its horizontal and vertical steel wires create a grid that guides plant growth. Stems naturally intertwine within the mesh without additional stakes, which saves time.

Fast-Growing Climbing Plants

The choice of plant alone determines the speed of coverage. Some species can cover a 2-meter high panel in a single season:

  • Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides): evergreen, fragrant, 1 to 2 m of growth per year. Best suited for mild climates.
  • Ivy: the classic choice. Evergreen all year round, grows in both shade and sun.
  • Golden Hops: explosive growth in spring (up to 6 m in one season), ideal for a quick effect.
  • Clematis: abundant flowering, easily weaves through the mesh of the fence.
  • Honeysuckle: semi-evergreen, fragrant, very vigorous once established.

What many underestimate is the timing. Planting in March-April, with properly prepared soil and consistent watering during the first few weeks, allows for visible coverage by July-August.

The Double Curtain Technique

Landscapers do not simply plant at the base of the fence. Many use what is called the double plant curtain: a low hedge on the garden side (lavender, boxwood, dwarf photinia) and climbers directly on the panel on the exterior side.

The low hedge conceals the base of the panel, often the most difficult area to cover, while the climbers do the work at height. By combining the two, the fence visually disappears in a few months. This layered approach provides a dense and natural result, far from a hastily dressed fence.

Combining Screening and Plants for Immediate Results

Three months is a short time. And sometimes, immediate privacy is needed, not next July. In such cases, it is possible to combine a privacy screen or synthetic screening with planting. Screening slats, heather brushwood, or artificial hedges clip directly onto rigid panels and offer immediate camouflage.

While the screen does its job, the climbing plants grow steadily and gradually cover it. After one or two years, the vegetation has taken over, and the result is entirely natural. At Districlos, you will find both rigid panels and compatible screening solutions, simplifying your project.

Mistakes That Prevent the Fence from Disappearing

Planting too far from the panel is the most common mistake. Climbers should be installed a maximum of 20-30 cm from the fence to attach quickly. If too far, they grow erratically and take twice as long to cover the surface.

Another pitfall: neglecting the soil at the base of the fence. After installation work, the soil is often compacted and poor. Adding compost, generous mulching, and regular watering for the first 6 weeks make all the difference between a result in 3 months and a result in 3 years.

Which Rigid Fencing to Choose for Easier Greening

Not all rigid panels are equally suitable for this type of project. Opt for fencing with standard mesh sizes (200 x 55 mm), which offer enough grip for stems without being too tight. Color also matters: a dark green panel blends into vegetation much faster than an anthracite grey or white one.

Height also plays a role. A fence between 1.53 m and 1.93 m is the easiest size to fully cover with vigorous climbers. Beyond 2 m, patience will be required, or you will need to choose particularly dynamic species such as hops or Virginia creeper. Districlos teams can guide you towards the panel best suited for your project, in-store or online, with delivery to the site or your home.
