Burglaries: 3 security flaws in your gate that thieves spot in 5 seconds

A burglar doesn’t spend an hour studying your home. Generally, a quick glance at your gate is all it takes to know whether they will try their luck or move on. Low-end locks, poorly secured gates, or total visibility into your property: certain defects stand out to someone who knows what to look for. And these flaws are far more common than one might think.

A gate that is too easy to force: the lock problem

This is the first element a burglar evaluates. A gate equipped with a simple latch or an entry-level lock is almost an invitation. Sometimes all it takes is a screwdriver or a pair of pliers to get through it. Experienced thieves spot old mortice locks and budget padlocks hanging from the leaf instantly.

The solution? A multi-point lock or an A2P-certified locking system designed to resist break-ins. If your gate is motorised, check that the motor features anti-picking and anti-lifting systems. Good locking doesn’t make your gate invincible, but it considerably increases the time required for an intrusion. And time is precisely what a burglar does not have.

Exposed hinges and an unstable frame

Many homeowners invest in a beautiful gate without checking a crucial detail: the fixings. Hinges exposed on the street side are a godsend for an intruder. They can simply be unhinged to remove the leaf without even touching the lock. A gate that wobbles, has play in its hinges, or rests on weakened pillars sends a clear message: this is a weak point.

Ensure that your hinges are installed on the inside of the property or that they are equipped with anti-lift pins. Pillars must be in good condition and correctly sized for the weight of the gate. A 2-metre aluminium leaf is not secured in the same way as a solid steel model. If you have any doubts about the stability of your installation, have the entire system checked by a professional.

Too much visibility from the street

An openwork or low gate offers a clear view of your courtyard, driveway, vehicles, and above all, your habits. The burglar can see if you are home, if the house looks empty, or if a French window has been left ajar. They can also spot the presence or absence of an alarm system, a dog, or a camera.

To limit this exposure, there are two options:

  • Install a solid or semi-solid gate that blocks the view from the outside while still letting light through
  • Add a privacy screen or slats to your existing fencing

The idea is not to turn your home into a bunker. It is to remove the free information you are giving to someone with bad intentions passing by your home.

Gate height: a real psychological deterrent

The deterrent effect of a sufficiently high gate is often underestimated. A 1.20 m model can be climbed in two seconds. At 1.80 m or higher, intrusion becomes visible, noisy, and risky. The burglar must climb, exposing them to the gaze of neighbours and passers-by. In most cases, they will prefer to look elsewhere.

If your current gate is too low, there is no need to replace everything. Certain solutions allow you to raise the height using extensions or complementary fencing elements. At Districlos, advisors can guide you toward the right product for your configuration, either in-store or online.

Take the test: look at your gate like a burglar

Go outside your home to the street side. Ask yourself three questions: Can I see the inside of the property? Does the gate look solid? Does the lock seem resistant? If you answer no to any of these, a thief will make the same analysis, but they will draw a very different conclusion from yours.

Strengthening your gate’s security doesn’t necessarily require a large budget or heavy work. Sometimes, simply changing a lock, adding a privacy screen, or replacing an ageing gate with a more suitable model is enough. These are the details that tip a burglar’s decision one way or the other.
