Can you install a cat flap in a rigid mesh fence?

Does your cat spend its days meowing at the garden fence, unable to reach the neighbor’s yard or return from its adventures? If you have rigid panel fencing, you have likely wondered: is it possible to install a cat flap in it? The answer is yes, but not just any which way. Between the type of fence, the panel mesh size, and the cutting method, there are a few points to understand before you get out the grinder.

What we mean by rigid fencing

Rigid fencing (also known as welded mesh fencing) is made of steel wires welded together, forming a non-deformable lattice. Fixed to metal posts, these panels are impact-resistant and long-lasting, especially when galvanized or plastic-coated. This is the type of fencing most commonly found around residential gardens.

The problem is that this tight mesh does not allow a cat to pass through, let alone a dog. And unlike a wooden or PVC fence, you cannot simply screw a cat flap into the panel. The installation must be adapted.

Why it is not as simple as with a door

On a front door or a wall, a cat flap is fixed into a solid support. You cut, you insert, you screw: it’s done. On a rigid mesh panel, there is no solid surface. The welded mesh cannot accommodate a standard cat flap without an intermediate support.

You must therefore create a frame or a mounting panel—made of wood, PVC, aluminum, or sheet metal—in which the cat flap will be mounted. This frame is then fixed or inserted into an opening cut into the panel.

Practical steps to take

The most common method: cut a section of the rigid panel using a grinder or wire cutters, then insert a custom-made frame. The steps are as follows:

  • Mark the location at the bottom of the panel, at a height suited to your pet (generally between 10 and 15 cm from the ground).
  • Cut the mesh cleanly, leaving a sufficient margin to fix the support frame.
  • Install the frame (rigid PVC plate, marine plywood, folded sheet metal, etc.) and screw the cat flap into it.
  • Secure the assembly to the panel using clamps, self-drilling screws, or mounting brackets, checking for stability.

Deburr the cut wires to avoid any injury, both for yourself and your pet.

Which type of cat flap to choose

Not all cat flaps are equal here. Choose a short-tunnel model, as the thickness of a rigid panel remains low (a few millimeters of wire + the frame). Long-tunnel cat flaps, designed for thick walls, will be oversized.

Microchip cat flaps work very well in this configuration and prevent neighborhood cats from inviting themselves into your home. Regarding size, check that the passage corresponds to your pet’s build. A standard adult cat needs an opening of approximately 15 × 15 cm minimum.

Does it weaken the fence?

This is a legitimate question. By cutting out part of the panel, you are removing welded wires that contribute to the overall rigidity. On a 2-meter wide panel, a 20 × 20 cm opening at the bottom does not really affect the strength, especially if the frame is well-fixed and reinforces the cut area.

However, avoid making this cut too close to a post or in the middle of the panel’s height. The bottom of the panel is the area under the least mechanical stress, making it the ideal spot.

An alternative: going under the fence rather than through it

If you do not want to touch the panel, another option is available: some owners intentionally leave a space of 12 to 15 cm between the ground and the bottom of the panel, enough for a cat to pass underneath. Simple, but with an obvious drawback: it also lets other animals through, and you no longer control the comings and goings.

To maintain control, a cat flap integrated into a frame remains the best solution. It requires a bit of DIY, but the result is clean and functional.
