What to Replace an Old Wooden Gate With?

What to Replace an Old Wooden Gate With?

Is your wooden gate starting to show its age? Peeling paint, warped slats, rusted hinges, wood rotting from the bottom… After a few years, maintenance is no longer enough. It’s time to face the facts: it’s time to replace it. But with what? Aluminum, steel, PVC… The alternatives are numerous, and some will save you from having to pull out the wood stain can every two years. Let’s review the options that are worth considering.

Why Wood Eventually Fails

Wood has charm; no one disputes that. But a wooden gate exposed to bad weather, sun, and humidity ages quickly. Without regular maintenance—sanding, staining, antifungal treatment—it cracks, greys, and warps. The joints loosen, the gate scrapes the ground, and one fine morning, it no longer closes.

The problem is that this maintenance is expensive and time-consuming. Many owners who replace their wooden gate do so for this reason: they are tired of refurbishing it every two or three years. Modern materials last much longer without sacrificing aesthetics.

Aluminum Gates: The Most Common Choice

This has become the benchmark when replacing a wooden gate. Aluminum does not rust, does not deform, and requires almost no maintenance. A quick wipe with soapy water once or twice a year, and you’re done.

In terms of design, it comes in many styles: solid, perforated, with horizontal or vertical slats, with or without decoration. You can even achieve a wood look with oak or walnut imitation finishes, without the drawbacks of natural material. Aluminum is also lightweight, which facilitates motorization. If you plan to switch to an automatic gate at the same time, this is a real plus.

Steel Gates: Robust and Deterrent

If security is your priority, steel is an excellent choice. Heavier and more resistant than aluminum, it offers unparalleled solidity. It is often found on gates of large properties or professional sites.

Modern steel is treated against corrosion by galvanization and powder coating. It no longer resembles the old metal gates that rusted in the first winter. Be careful, however: its weight requires solid pillars and an adapted motorization system. If your current pillars are in good condition and sufficiently sized, replacement can be done without major masonry work.

PVC Gates: Budget-Friendly, Zero Maintenance

PVC remains the most economical option. Lightweight, insensitive to corrosion, and easy to install, it is well suited for a pedestrian gate or a garden gate that does not need to withstand significant impacts.

However, it has its limitations. It is less rigid than aluminum or steel, and the available colors are often limited to white, grey, or beige. For a large swing or sliding gate exposed to wind, it is not always the best choice. It also ages less well under UV over the long term.

Swing or Sliding: Take the Opportunity to Change Your System

Replacing your gate is also an opportunity to rethink the type of opening. If your old swing gate forces you to maneuver in an alley that is too short or sloped, switching to a sliding gate can change your daily life.

Key criteria to remember:

  • Swing gate: Requires clearance in front of or behind the gate. Suitable for wide, flat entrances.
  • Sliding gate: Ideal when space is limited. It slides along the fence and is very easy to motorize.

How to Choose the Right Dimensions

Before ordering, measure the opening between the pillars. The standard width for a vehicle passage is between 3 and 4 meters, but each configuration is different. Also check the desired height, the condition of existing pillars, and the nature of the ground (flat, sloped, uneven).

If your pillars are damaged or undersized, they may need to be reinforced before installation. This is a point not to be overlooked, especially if you are upgrading from a lightweight wooden gate to a heavier steel model. At Districlos, our teams can advise you on sizing and compatibility with your existing installation.
