Do you raise pigeons and regularly find feathers on the ground after a bird of prey passes? Falcons, sparrowhawks, buzzards: these predators quickly spot a poorly protected pigeon loft. The good news is that a well-designed fence largely solves the problem. Here’s how to secure your pigeon loft without an excessive budget.
Why Birds of Prey Attack Your Pigeon Loft
A pigeon loft is an open-air pantry. Sparrowhawks and peregrine falcons hunt by sight and swoop down on their prey at high speed. Your pigeons are most exposed when taking flight or returning to the dovecote.
However, the danger is not limited to direct attacks. The repeated presence of a bird of prey stresses the birds, disrupts reproduction, and causes some pigeons to flee or refuse to return. A breeding operation under this constant pressure loses productivity. Securing the living space therefore becomes a priority, both for the safety and well-being of the birds.
Which Mesh to Choose for a Secure Aviary
It all starts with the mesh. To prevent a bird of prey from passing through or slipping a talon between the meshes, aim for a fine and sturdy mesh. A mesh that is too wide leaves the field open to attacks from above or the sides.
Depending on your setup, three options stand out:
- Galvanized welded mesh: robust and durable, ideal for a fixed structure that withstands bad weather.
- Hexagonal chicken wire mesh: economical and easy to install, sufficient for small aviaries provided the mesh remains fine.
- Single twist mesh: practical for delimiting a large outdoor run around the pigeon loft.
For the upper part of the aviary, where attacks are most frequent, welded mesh with a tight weave remains the safest bet. This is the point that birds of prey exploit the most.
Protecting the Top, the Number One Weak Point
Most breeders secure the sides but forget the roof. Yet, it is from above that the bird of prey dives. Without overhead protection, your side fence is almost useless.
Install a cover mesh stretched over the entire surface of the outdoor run. You can use welded mesh fixed to a metal frame, or a lighter protective net for large areas. Stretch the entire assembly tightly: a loose mesh allows the bird of prey to land on it and reach your birds through the openings. A well-secured cover changes everything.
Properly Fastening and Stretching Your Fence
A poorly installed fence deforms, leaves gaps, and eventually gives way. The quality of installation is as important as the quality of the material. For a fixed aviary, plan for solid posts sealed or anchored to the ground, and stretch the mesh with tension wires to prevent sagging.
Also consider the base. Birds of prey are not the only predators: foxes, martens, and cats can dig or sneak in from below. Bury the bottom of the mesh a few centimeters or install an anti-burrowing skirt. Good protection leaves no openings.
Combining Fencing and Deterrent Devices
The fence remains your first line of defense, but a few complementary devices reinforce it. Shiny reflections, such as old CDs or reflective strips, disrupt the vision of birds of prey and discourage them. Some breeders also install owl silhouettes or predator decoys.
These tricks do not replace a solid mesh structure, but they add a layer of peace of mind, especially where predator pressure is high. The ideal: a well-enclosed aviary combined with these visual elements to disrupt predators’ hunting habits.
Finding the Right Equipment for Your Project
Securing a pigeon loft requires quality equipment adapted to your setup. Between the types of mesh, posts, tension wires, and cover nets, the choice can quickly become complicated. Good advice saves time and avoids costly mistakes.
