Rodent-Proof Fencing: How to Protect Your Property?

Rodent-Proof Fencing: How to Protect Your Property?

Rats, field mice, voles, moles, or rabbits that dig, gnaw, and wreak havoc everywhere they go… Rodents can quickly turn a beautiful property into a battlefield. Ravaged vegetable gardens, gnawed cables, weakened foundations: the damage is costly. The most effective solution? Rodent-proof fencing, installed in the right place and in the right way. We explain how to permanently protect your property.

What is Rodent-Proof Fencing Really For?

Rodent-proof fencing serves as an impenetrable physical barrier for small burrowing animals. Unlike repellents or traps, which yield random results, fencing physically blocks access. The principle is simple: a rodent cannot pass through or bypass a mesh that is fine enough and properly buried.

It is used to protect a vegetable garden, secure a chicken coop, prevent moles from damaging a lawn, or isolate building foundations. It is also a valuable ally under a terrace or garden shed, where rodents love to settle out of sight.

What Type of Fencing to Choose Depending on the Rodent?

Not all fencing is created equal. The right choice mainly depends on the animal you want to keep away and the fineness of its size. A rabbit cannot pass through the same openings as a field mouse.

Here are the criteria that really matter:

  • Mesh size: For rats and mice, aim for a mesh of 6 mm maximum. For moles and voles, a 12 to 16 mm mesh is sufficient. For rabbits, 25 mm remains effective.
  • Material: Galvanized mesh resists corrosion, which is essential for buried use. Stainless steel is even more durable but more expensive.
  • Wire thickness: The thicker the wire, the more it resists teeth. Rats gnaw through everything, including some thin metals.

Welded mesh is generally more robust than triple-twist mesh for this purpose, as it does not deform under the pressure of a digging animal.

How to Install the Fencing for Effectiveness?

The most common mistake is to install the fencing only on the surface. Rodents dig: if the fencing stops at ground level, they will pass underneath in a few minutes. The golden rule is therefore to bury the fencing.

Dig a trench 30 to 50 cm deep along the area to be protected. Place the mesh in the trench, folding it outwards in an L-shape for the last 15 centimeters. This horizontal bend discourages animals attempting to dig at the base of the barrier: they encounter the mesh instead of passing underneath. Then backfill, compacting the soil well.

Protecting a Vegetable Garden or Specific Crops

The vegetable garden is often the first victim. To protect it without fencing everything, two approaches exist depending on the threat. Against moles and voles that attack from below, a horizontal mesh is placed at the bottom of raised beds or flowerbeds before adding soil. This is radical for carrots, salads, and bulbs.

Against rabbits and hares that graze on the surface, a perimeter fence is installed, buried 20 to 30 cm deep and rising at least 60 cm high. Remember to monitor corners and crossing points: this is always where animals test the strength of your installation.

Mistakes to Absolutely Avoid

Many properties remain vulnerable due to neglected details. The first pitfall is to underestimate the burial depth. Fencing buried at 10 cm is almost useless against a motivated vole.

Another common mistake: choosing non-galvanized mesh for buried use. In a few seasons, rust will pierce the metal and create openings. Finally, never leave poorly secured junctions between two rolls of mesh. Rodents immediately spot the slightest gap. Use tension wire and strong fasteners to connect the panels, leaving no play.

How Much Does Rodent Protection Cost?

The budget varies depending on the surface area, mesh quality, and type of installation. Galvanized fine-mesh fencing generally costs between €3 and €10 per square meter. For a small vegetable garden, expect a few tens of euros for materials. For fencing an entire property, the bill obviously increases, but remains much lower than the damage a rodent can cause to cables or foundations.
