How to Take Accurate Measurements for Your Fence Project

Before ordering your fence, it's important to measure your space correctly. The measuring process is the same whether you're installing on a base plate or setting posts directly in the ground.
Don't worry if you're new to this—just follow these straightforward steps.

1. Determine the Total Length

Example perimeter measurement: 20+10+20+10 = 60 m

Example for an L-shaped yard: add up the length of each side

2. Choose the Height

H: Calculate your fence height based on the above-ground portion.

Your needs:
0.6m to 1.2m: ideal for marking property lines
1.5m to 1.8m: a good balance for home security and privacy
2.0m and above: best for maximum privacy.

Local regulations:
Each municipality has zoning rules (often called a zoning code or ordinance) that may set a maximum fence height. In some neighborhoods, you may be limited to 1.8m or required to follow specific design guidelines (such as in subdivisions or historic districts). Always check with your local city or county office before ordering to avoid surprises.

3. Decide if You Need a Base (Sill)

A base (such as a small concrete wall or slab) can help:

• • Prevent grass from growing under the fence
• • Hold back soil if your yard isn't level (up to 30% of the base height)
• • Add structural strength
• • Deter animals from entering your garden
• • Enhance the overall look

If your yard is flat and even, a base is optional.

There are two main types of bases: concrete or powder-coated steel.

4. Decide if You Need a Base Plate

A base plate lets you anchor your posts to a concrete surface. On a wall or concrete slab, it secures both your post and fence panel.

Note: If you plan to add privacy slats or screening to a rigid fence, setting posts in concrete is recommended. Base plates are not advised in this case, as extra weight and wind load can damage your fence.

5. Account for Sloped Ground

Stepped installation: Each section is installed level, but at a different height from the previous one.

To plan this, measure the length of each horizontal section (step).

You can add a base for each step, either by burying it or cutting it to the right length.
Alternatively, cut your panels to fit or use chain link, which is easier to adapt to slopes.

6. Calculate the Number of Posts Needed

The number of posts depends on your total length and fence type. Each fence panel is installed between two posts.
A standard panel is 2.5m long.

Example: For 25m of fencing with 2.5m panels: 25 ÷ 2.5 = 10 panels
You’ll need 11 posts (1 starter post + 1 post between each panel)

Our posts are designed for corners, so you don’t need extra corner posts! However, if you’re adding a base, double the number of posts.

Each rigid mesh panel is 2.5 meters long.
For certain layouts or specific lengths—such as 6 meters or along a curve—you can cut a panel to fit. Rigid mesh panels are easy to cut with the right tool (like an angle grinder or bolt cutters), so you can get a perfect fit for your project.
