Choose from 20" or 39" high mesh, depending on your needs.
For a fully enclosed run, 20" is usually sufficient. For open-top enclosures, we recommend the 39" height—rabbits, for example, can jump up to four times their height!
How to install chicken wire
Looking to build a spacious chicken run in your backyard?
Installation is straightforward. Dig 16" deep holes and set your posts every 5 feet using a sledgehammer.
For extra stability, add bracing posts at the ends. Run tension bars or tension wire between the posts—one at ground level and one 2" below the top. Unroll your mesh along the wire and use tensioning tools to keep it taut.
Be sure to bury part of the mesh below ground to prevent animals from digging underneath.

For the best protection, go with galvanized triple-twist wire mesh featuring hexagonal openings between 3/8" and 9/16". This style of mesh is more resistant to predators and helps keep chicks safely inside the coop. Avoid welded wire mesh, as the openings are often too large. A roll of galvanized steel mesh is usually the most cost-effective and reliable option for your chicken run.
The recommended height depends on your chickens' breed: at least 4 ft for larger breeds, and 6 ft for bantam chickens, which are more likely to jump. A 5 ft roll of mesh is suitable in most situations, but a 6.5 ft fence offers the best protection against escapes and ground predators like foxes.
Use galvanized staples to securely fasten the chicken wire to your wooden posts. Space the staples about every 8 inches along each post, making sure they’re driven firmly into the wood. Stretch the wire tightly before securing it to prevent sagging. Alternatively, you can use galvanized wire or fencing staples if you prefer.

Use wire cutters to cut your roll of chicken wire mesh. Keep the mesh stretched out on a flat surface and snip each wire along the hexagonal pattern. For long, straight cuts, tin snips are also a good option. Wear protective gloves to prevent injuries, and bend back any sharp wire ends after cutting.
Use a staple gun to secure the chicken wire directly to the wooden frame. Start by placing a staple in the center of each side to hold the wire in place, then add staples every 2 inches along the edges. Make sure to pull the wire tight before stapling, and leave about 3/8 to 5/8 inch of wire overhanging each side for a strong, long-lasting hold.
