Rabbit Wire Mesh Fence

Choose galvanized welded wire mesh with mesh openings no larger than 1/2" to 1" (13 to 25 mm) to prevent escapes. Welded square mesh is highly resistant to chewing thanks to its sturdy construction. Avoid hexagonal chicken wire, as it's too flexible and may not withstand pressure. Use wire that's at least 1.2 mm thick and a minimum height of 3 feet for effective protection.

A 3-foot fence is generally recommended to prevent pet rabbits from jumping over. For wild rabbits or areas with predators, consider a height of 4 to 5 feet. Dwarf breeds need at least 28 inches of protection, while larger breeds require a taller, more secure barrier.

A rabbit can jump up to 1 meter high, which is about four times its body length. Dwarf breeds usually reach around 80 centimeters without a running start, while larger breeds may clear even higher obstacles. Jumping ability depends on the rabbit’s age, breed, and motivation.

The recommended burial depth is between 12 and 16 inches, depending on the level of protection you need. This depth helps prevent rabbits from digging under the fence and also deters predators like foxes. Dig a trench around the perimeter and bend the mesh outward at the bottom in an L-shape for extra security against digging.

A mesh size between 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch is ideal for keeping rabbits safe and preventing access by small predators. Welded wire mesh with square openings up to 1 inch can also work, but smaller mesh sizes offer better protection against weasels and other pests. Avoid mesh larger than 1 inch, as young rabbits may be able to squeeze their heads through and risk injury.

Set sturdy fence posts no more than 6 feet apart, then attach the mesh to a wooden frame using staples or fencing nails. Make sure the mesh is pulled tight to prevent sagging, and use wire or zip ties to secure it further. Check each attachment point to ensure the fence is strong enough to keep out predators.
