How to Measure for Your Fence Project
Before placing your order, it’s important to take accurate measurements for your fence. The measuring process is the same whether you’re installing posts on base plates or setting them directly in the ground.
Don’t worry if you’re new to this—just follow these straightforward steps.
1. Determine the Total Length
Example of measuring the perimeter: 20+10+20+10 = 60 m
Example for an L-shaped yard: add up the length of each side
2. Choose the Height
H: Measure the above-ground height of your fence mesh.

Your needs:
24"–48": good for marking property lines
60"–72": a solid choice for home security and privacy
80" and up: best for maximum privacy
+8–12" for posts set on a wall
+12–20" for posts set directly in the ground
(depends on soil type)
Check your local regulations for allowed fence height before you order.

Local regulations:
Most towns have zoning rules that may set a maximum fence height. In some neighborhoods, you may be limited to 72" or required to follow specific design guidelines (especially in subdivisions or historic areas). Always check with your local building department before ordering to avoid issues.
3. Decide If You Need a Base (Sill)
The base (a short concrete wall or slab) is used to:
- • Prevent grass from growing under the fence
- • Hold back soil if your yard isn’t level (up to 30% of the base height)
- • Add strength to your installation
- • Deter animals from entering your yard
- • Add a decorative touch
If your ground is flat and even, a base is optional.
There are two types of base: concrete or powder-coated steel.
4. Decide If You Need a Base Plate
A base plate lets you anchor your posts to a concrete surface. On a wall or concrete slab, it secures your post and fence mesh.
Note: If you plan to add privacy slats to a rigid fence, it’s better to set posts in concrete. Base plates are not recommended for privacy panels, as wind load and weight increase and may damage your fence.
5. Account for Sloped Ground
Stepped installation: Each section is installed level, but each is set higher or lower than the previous one.
To plan this, measure the length of each level section (horizontal segment).
You can install a base for each step, either burying it or cutting it to fit.
Alternatively, cut your panels to size or use chain link mesh, which is easier to adapt.

6. Calculate the Number of Posts Needed
The number of posts depends on your total length and fence type. Each fence panel is installed between two posts.
Each panel is 8'2" long.
Example: For 82' of fencing with 8'2" panels: 82 ÷ 8.2 = 10 panels
You’ll need 11 posts (1 starter post + 1 post between each panel)
Our posts are designed for corners, so you don’t need extra posts for angles! If you’re using a base, double the number of posts.
Each rigid mesh panel is 8.2 feet long.
For certain layouts or specific lengths—such as 20 feet or along a curve—you can trim a panel to fit. Rigid mesh panels can be cut easily with the right tool (angle grinder or bolt cutters) for a custom fit.
Summary:
Measure your total perimeter.
Choose your height (based on your needs and local rules).
Check if you need a base or base plate.
See if your ground is sloped or flat.
Count your corners to plan for the right number of posts.

Note: The posts included in our kits are designed for standard installation on level ground. If your terrain is sloped, you may need longer posts.
Our privacy slats are covered for 10 years for functionality and stability, within a temperature range of -20°F to +104°F, provided installation, storage, and transport guidelines are followed. Natural fading from UV exposure is expected with PVC slats and is not covered. The warranty does not include direct or indirect damage from installation or replacement of slats.

Adding privacy screening to your fence increases both privacy and wind load. For tall or exposed fences, we recommend using our post reinforcement kits. These are easy to install on concrete-set posts only, either during installation or as a later upgrade, and help ensure your fence remains secure and stable over time.
