Thinking about adding a gate to secure your property and enhance your yard? Before you buy, it’s crucial to take accurate measurements. This guide walks you through how to measure for your gate, choose between a swing or sliding model, and avoid common mistakes.

1. Measuring the Width Between Gate Posts

Measure the inside distance between the two posts at three different heights:

Why measure three times? Posts may not be perfectly parallel—especially on older installations or if there’s been some settling over time.

Record the smallest of the three measurements—this is the usable width for your gate.
