How to Take Accurate Measurements for Your Fence Project
Before you order your fence, it’s essential to measure your space correctly. The measuring process is the same whether you’re installing on a base plate or setting posts in the ground.
Don’t worry if you’re new to this—just follow these straightforward steps.
1. Determine the Total Length
Example of measuring the perimeter: 20+10+20+10 = 60 m
Example for an L-shaped yard: measure and add each side
2. Choose the Height
H: Calculate your fence height by considering the above-ground portion.

Your needs:
0.6m to 1.2m: ideal for simply marking a boundary
1.5m to 1.8m: a good balance for home security and privacy
2.0m and above: best for maximum privacy.
+8–12 in for posts set on a low wall
+12–20 in for posts set directly in the ground
(depends on your soil type)
Check your local regulations for maximum fence height before you choose.

Local regulations:
Each municipality may have zoning rules or a local ordinance that sets a maximum fence height. In some areas, you may be limited to 6 ft or required to follow specific design guidelines (for example, in subdivisions or historic districts). Always check with your local city office before ordering to avoid surprises.
3. Decide If You Need a Base or Curb
The base (a small concrete wall or slab) is useful for:
- • Preventing grass from growing under the fence
- • Holding back soil if your yard isn’t level (up to 30% of the base height)
- • Adding strength to your installation
- • Keeping animals from entering your yard
- • Enhancing the overall look
If your yard is flat and even, a base is optional.
There are two types of bases: concrete or powder-coated steel.
4. Decide If You Need a Base Plate
A base plate lets you anchor your posts to a concrete surface. On a wall or concrete slab, it secures both your post and fence panel.
Note: If you plan to add privacy slats or screening to a rigid fence, it’s better to set your posts in concrete. Base plates aren’t recommended for privacy panels, as wind load and weight increase significantly, which can damage your fence.
5. Account for Sloped Ground
Stepped installation (by sections): Each section is installed level, but at a different height from the previous one.
To plan this, measure the length of each level section (horizontal segment).
You can add a base for each step, either by burying it or cutting it to the right length.
Alternatively, you can cut your panels to fit or use chain link, which is more flexible for slopes.

6. Calculate the Number of Posts Needed
The number of posts depends on the total length and the type of fence. Each fence panel is installed between two posts.
Each panel is 2.5 m long.
Example: For 25 m of fencing with 2.5 m panels: 25 ÷ 2.5 = 10 panels
You’ll need 11 posts (1 starter post + 1 post between each panel)
Our posts are designed to handle corners, so you don’t need extra corner posts! However, if you’re adding a base, double the number of posts.
Each rigid mesh panel is 2.5 meters long.
For certain layouts or specific lengths—such as 6 meters or along a curve—you can adjust the installation by cutting a panel. Rigid mesh panels can be easily cut with the right tool (such as an angle grinder or bolt cutters) for a perfect fit.
In Summary:
Measure the total perimeter.
Choose your height (based on your needs and local regulations).
Check if you need a base or a base plate.
See if your ground is sloped or flat.
Count your corners to plan for the right number of posts.
