How to Take Accurate Measurements for Your Fence Project
Before ordering your fence, it's essential to measure your space correctly. The measuring process is the same whether you're installing on a base plate or setting posts directly into the ground.
Don't worry—even if you're new to fencing, just follow these straightforward steps.
1. Determine the Total Length
Example of measuring the perimeter: 20+10+20+10 = 60 m
Example for an L-shaped yard: measure and add each side
2. Choose the Height
H: Calculate the height of your fence, considering the portion above ground.

Your needs:
2ft–4ft: ideal for marking property lines
5ft–6ft: a good balance for home security and privacy
Over 6ft: best for maximum privacy
+8–12 in for posts set on a wall
+12–20 in for posts set directly in the ground
(depends on your soil type)
Check your local regulations for permitted fence heights before choosing.

Local regulations:
Every city or town may have zoning rules that set a maximum fence height. In some areas, you may be limited to 6ft or required to follow specific design guidelines (especially in subdivisions or historic zones). Always check with your local authorities before ordering to avoid issues.
3. Decide If You Need a Base (Sill)
A base (concrete curb or slab) can help:
- • Prevent grass from growing under the fence
- • Hold back soil if your yard isn't level (up to 30% of the base height)
- • Add strength to your installation
- • Deter animals from entering your yard
- • Enhance the look of your fence
If your ground is flat and even, a base is optional.
There are two types of bases: concrete or powder-coated steel.
4. Decide If You Need Base Plates
Base plates are used to anchor posts onto a concrete surface. On a wall or concrete slab, they hold your post and fence securely.
Note: If you plan to add privacy slats to a rigid fence, it's better to set posts directly in the ground. Using base plates is not recommended in this case, as the extra weight and wind load can damage your fence.
5. Consider the Slope of Your Yard
Stepped installation (by sections): Each section is installed level, but each is set higher or lower than the previous one, following the slope.
To plan this, measure the length of each level section (horizontal segment).
You can add a base for each section, either by burying it or cutting it to size.
Alternatively, you can cut your panels or use chain link mesh, which is more flexible for slopes.

6. Calculate the Number of Posts Needed
The number of posts depends on your total fence length and the type of fence. Each fence panel is installed between two posts.
Each panel is 8.2 ft long.
Example: For 82 ft of fencing using 8.2 ft panels: 82 ÷ 8.2 = 10 panels
You'll need 11 posts (1 starter post + 1 post between each panel)
Our posts are designed to handle corners, so you don't need extra posts for angles! However, if you're using a base, double the number of posts.
Each rigid mesh panel measures 8.2 feet in length.
For custom layouts or specific lengths—such as 20 ft or along a curve—you can trim a panel to fit. Rigid mesh panels are easy to cut with the right tool (angle grinder or bolt cutters), so you can achieve a perfect fit for your project.
In Summary:
